According to contemporary reports in Road & Track Porsche had to reopen the assembly line on which the 4 litre / 244 cui motor’s were built because the decision to build the GT3 RS 4.0 limited edition had come after the decision had been made to launch the new 991 bodied 911 series.

Variable Turbine Geometry – Porsche 997 Turbo S

This is one of the last series 1 2008 model year Porsche 997’s distinguished by the LED indicators across the outer intakes and bug eye headlights lights from the older 996 with which it shares a four wheel drive power train.

With over 100,000 units sold the 997 is without doubt the most popular model Porsche have ever made even the TDM who is not a noted Porsche fan thinks a 997 will “make love to your fingertips and stir your soul.” Lets hope he washes his hands regularly.

The 997 Turbo was tested by TDM on an empty German Autobahn with an indicated 200 mph on the clock 2 mph faster than the top speed claimed by Porsche, Motor Trend tested the same model as capable of accelerating 0 – 60 mph (97 kph) in 3.2 seconds a full 0.5 secs ahead of the manufacturers claims.

The turbo S comes with a 525 hp 3,824 cc 233.4 cui flat six cylinder engine which introduced variable turbine geometry on the twin turbo’s.

Sadly this vehicle is already a late model a series 2 997 Turbo S was launched in 2010.

Hope you have enjoyed today’s variable turbine geometry edition of ‘Gettin’ a lil’ psycho on tyres’ and that you’ll join me again tomorrow for a look at a performance water cooled edition as we round out Porsche week. Don’t forget to feed the fish before you leave and please don’t forget to come back now !

The slowest car they have ever built – Audi R8

For the 8th day of Christmas and first day of the New Year I present this Audi R8.

According to the on line publicity it takes 70 skilled workers to fit over 5,000 unique parts to each vehicle and build 25 of these cars a day.

These vents direct air straight through the car.

The aluminium space frame which includes 99 meters of welds, 782 punch rivets, 308 self tapping screws, and 113 weld studs takes 45 minutes to manufacture.

The R8 rides on a magnetic damping system which provides the the driver with two modes of ride, comfort or sport.

This is the first Audi to compete with Porsche it is not quite as quick to accelerate but has been demonstrated to have slightly better handling than the 997.

Powered by a 420 hp all aluminium dry sump 32 valve V8 with Fuel Stratified Injection, FSI, the R8 is capable of a 12.8 sec 1/4 mile and a top speed in excess of 185 mph.

Audi use 210 exterior LED’s in the R8, 186 of them as brake lights which run at 5,700 degrees centigrade, they are said to use 50% less energy than conventional bulbs.

Expect to see racing versions of the R8 in two wheel drive form make an impact in GT3 racing in the coming year particularly at the annual 24 hour Nurburgring race.

Hope you have enjoyed to today’s LED edition of ‘Getting a lil’ psycho on tyres and that you will join me tomorrow living the life of Riley. Wishing you all a healthy and happy New Year, don’t forget to come back now !

Street Legal & Race Ready – Porsche 997 GT3 RS

The Porsche 997 GT3 RS is a road legal competition spec version of the 997 GT3 distinguishable from the 996 GT3 RS by its bug eye headlights.

Weighing 1,375 kg/ 3,031 lbs the 997 GT3 RS weighs 20 kgs / 44 lbs less than the 997 GT3 thanks to the plastic bonnet lid, plexi glass rear window and carbon fibre rear wing giving a power to weight ratio of 300 hp per tonne.

This 2009 version can accelerate from rest to 62.5 mph in 4 seconds, and on to a top speed of 193 mph.

The ’09 997 GT3 is powered by a 415 hp 3.8 litre / 231 cui normally aspirated water cooled flat 6. Around 1,500 of these vehicles were built many being raced in Europe and the United States.

Hope you have enjoyed to days road legal racing edition of ‘Gettin’ a lil’ psycho on tyres’ and that you’ll join me tomorrow for something a little more pedestrian.
