Jethro Bodine’s ‘Stang – Mustang Ranchero

Ever wondered what you might get if you crossed the Personal Luxury chique of a Ford Mustang pony car with the all round practicality of a Ford Ranchero pick up ?

There is an unsubstantiated myth on the intelnet which says that from 1965 to 1966 Beverly Hills Mustang Limited in California built 50 such vehicles with Ford’s blessing, and further more somewhere around 60% of them were exported to Europe !

Beverly Hills Motors Limited of 9280 Alden Drive Beverly Hills, California, did indeed build some pick up Mustangs, one ex employee believes only 3 or 4 may might have been built using fiberglass beds.

However a German Pony Car site points to this particular car being built by a Mick Bull who started with a 66′ basket case Mustang for which he fabricated the bed, subframe connectors and a gas strut operated tailgate.

The motor is officially registered as 5,331 cc / 325.32 cui which does not equate with any Ford motors I can think of. According to some sources the car is also said to have a 331 cui motor, but again the only motor of this size I know of is the mid to late fifties Chrysler Poly motors. If you know better please do not hesitate to chime in below.

It is said the Beverly Hills Motors Mustero conversions cost the same as a Shelby Cobra, over $6,000, which made for prohibitive sales though Harry Morgan and Debbie Boone are believed to have shown an interest in at least one of the cars as it was being built probably at some point in the mid to late 1970’s.

Having a love of both Mustangs and pickups this car appeals to me as the kind of upgrade someone might have tried to sell Jethro Bodine in an episode of the Beverly Hillbillies.

Yate Town FC Host – Bristol American Car Show

After seeing the start of the Chipping Sodbury Classic Run a couple of weeks ago, I popped along to the Bristol American Car Show at Yate Town Football Club.

Ford Edsel Station Wagon, Bristol American Car Show, Yate Town FC

A fabulous assortment of vehicles included this ’59 Ford Edsel Station Wagon which in li’l ol’ England would be difficult to fit in a standard ASDA, UK Walmart, parking space and could easily pass for a mobile home.

Kenworth W900L, Bristol American Car Show, Yate Town FC

The only thing we have ever built of comparable size to the Kenworth W900L is a military all wheel drive tracked vehicle transporter, this Kenworth could also double as a great ‘Glamper’ for a music festival like Glastonbury.

The twin vertical headlight clusters, taken from the ’66 Ford Fairlane, above tell me that this is a 1967 model year Ford Ranchero.

Looking super fly was this 1972 Riviera by Buick.

Oldsmobile Cutlass Coupé, Bristol American Car Show, Yate FC

1970’s down sizing did little for US Automotive design as the 1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass Coupé above attests, unless like me your a fan of big bumper Volvo’s of course.

Dodge RAM 1500 Daytona, Bristol American Car Show, Yate FC

Finally above a 345hp Hemi powered 2005 Dodge RAM 1500 Daytona pickup, described by one reviewer as having plenty of Go Man Go !

Protoect-O-Top – Ford Ranchero

Unlike it’s earlier siblings, which had been based on the full size Ford Custom range, the second generation Ford Ranchero was based on the mid size Ford Falcon range and launched in 1960.

In 1964 like it’s parent Falcon the Ranchero received a face lift with the 4.7 litre / 289 cui Windsor V8 replacing the 4.3 litre / 260 cui variant in the top performance models.

Note that while the ’64 Falcon was known as second generation, the ’60 to ’65 model Ranchero’s inclusive are known as second generation Ranchero’s.

Toady’s featured vehicle powered by a “289” was built in 1965, but appears not to have been imported into the UK until 2009.

The rear deck is covered by an aftermarket Protect-O-Top made of fibre glass with spring loaded hinges made in Santa Clara CA, Protect-O-Top appears to have gone out of business after the owner failed to attract a buyer some years ago.

In 2011 a ’65 Ranchero owner managed to trace two former Protect-O-Top employees who had access to the original moulds. They were persuaded to make up some new Ranchero Protect-O-Tops for between $650 and $900 each. The cost of shipping these items doubled the cost, because they could only be carried at commercial rates due to their “66 x 60” unpacked size.

With a larger payload than the VW Type 2 pickup, against which the Ranchero was designed to compete, the model did well, unlike it’s parent Falcon which could not hold it’s own against the new Ford Mustang pony car.
