Madman’s Kurtis -Muntz Jet #52M-505-3

In 1948 race car manufacturer Frank Kurtis started building a run of High Performance 2 seat convertibles for the road powered by Ford V8’s.

At the first Bonneville Nationals NHRA founder Wally Parks drove one Franks cars to a two way timed run of 142.5 mph.

With only 36 cars built Frank’s Kurtis Kraft Sports came to the attention of the legendary media pitch man Earl William “Madman” Muntz who was sufficiently impressed to buy the whole project including manufacturing rights.

Muntz Jet, Marin Concours d'Elegance

Muntz made a few alterations to the Kurtis Kraft Sport which included lengthening it, putting in a back seat, replacing the Ford V8 with a Cadillac V8 to turn the car into a 120 mph high performance personal luxury car offered in loud selection of colours and called it the Muntz Jet.

Muntz Jet, Marin Concours d'Elegance

The light pink 1953 Muntz Jet, seen in these photographs by Geoffrey Horton at last years Marin Concours d’Elegance, was bought new by Gloria De Haven and delivered to her at the Plaza Hotel in New York.

Muntz Jet, Marin Concours d'Elegance

Only around 400 Muntz Jets had been built by 1954 when Madman Muntz pulled the plug on the project claiming to have lost $1000 on each one. Highly prized today the Muntz Jet is seen as the for runner of the Chevrolet Corvette and Ford Thunderbird personal luxury cars.

My thanks to Geoffrey Horton for sharing his photographs.

Thanks for joining meon this Madman’s Kurtis edition of “Gettin’ a li’l psycho on tyres” I hope you will join me again for Ferrari Friday tomorrow. Don’t forget to come back now !

Classic Americans – Desert Classic Concours d’Elegance

A couple of weeks ago Geoffrey Horton loaded his trailer up with his Jaguar XK140 and headed for Palm Springs and the Desert Classic Concours d’Elegance. Toady’s blog features photo’s Geoffrey kindly shared of some of the US built cars that were taking part.

Lincoln L Brunn Beetle Back, Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance

By 1925 Cadillac founder Henry M Leland had sold the second marque he had founded, Lincoln, to Henry Ford for $8m but Ford continued to up date the L-Series first seen in 1917, until 1930. The 1925 Lincoln above features a nickel plated radiator shell first seen in 1924.

Cadillac V16 Series 452, Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance

Need a 2 door convertible with plenty of room for occasional passengers and cargo in the boot / trunk the 1930 Cadillac V16 Series 452 is just the car you are looking for.

Packard 1005 Convertible Coupe , Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance

Winner of this years Desert Classic Concours d’Elegance was the 1933 V12 powered Packard 1005 Twelve Convertible Coupe seen above. The 1005 was the tenth Packard series car and shared 11 different body with the V8 powered Packard Super Eight.

Cord 812 s/c, Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance

1935 the Cord 810 was the sensation of the New York Auto Show, by 1937 when the supercharged 812 convertible above was built the company had a less than complimentary reputation for reliability and the following year the remains of the company were sold to Avaiation Corporation which today is part of Textron Systems Corporation.

Diamond T Pickup, Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance

Following a tip from some quail hunters the owner of this rugged 1949 Diamond T Model 201 1 ton pickup abandoned in a field near Globe Arizona, dented and rusted it was 90% there and the Hercules six cylinder motor still turned. After restoration this Diamond T won the 2010 Desert Classic Concours d’Elegance Best Non-Passenger Vehicle award.

Packard 250, Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance

Visiting Paris Retromobile in the 1990’s Californian Carl Schneider came across some drawings by Pininfarina of a Packard that was never built. After purchasing the drawings Carl and Peter Portugal built the likeness of the Pininfarina Packard, seen above, using a 1952 Packard 250 series Mayfair two-door hardtop as a starting point.

Scarab Continuation, Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance

In 1958 Lance Reventlow started building a successful series of sports racing cars, above is a continuation model.

Guldstrand Corvette GS90, Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance

In the early 1990’s Corvette racer Dick Guldstrand approached General Motors with a plan to build his own vehicle based on the Corvette asking for 15 chassis and a few million dollars to get him going, he got one car and GM’s blessing. Dick ended up building six of the $200,000 dollar cars, the one above is the second of them, built in 1993.

Vector M12, Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance

Nearly three times more common than the Guldstarnd Corvette is the Vector M12 of which 17 examples were manufactured from 1995 to 1999. The Vector was built on a modified Lamborghini Diablo Chassis and is powered by a 499 hp Lamborghini V12.

My thanks to Geoffrey for sharing his photographs more of which will be seen tomorrow and next Wednesday.

Thanks for joining me on this “Classic Americans” edition of “Gettin’ a li’l psycho on tyres” I hope you will join me tomorrow for Ferrari Friday to see a work in progress.

Coffee, Croissant & Cars #11/13 – Avenue Drivers Club

Earlier this month I managed to pop down to the Avenue Drivers Club where an ever unpredictable smorgasbord of vehicles turned up.

GN, Avenue Drivers Club, Queen Square, Bristol

Well known chain drive enthusiast Duncan Pittaway brought his two cylinder 1921 GN along which I first saw a couple of years ago when I was competing in the Cross Trophy.

Cadillac Sedan de Ville, Avenue Drivers Club, Queen Square, Bristol

Another familiar vehicle present, that is also familiar to these pages, was the magnificent 1973 Cadillac Sedan de Ville above.

BMW M5, Avenue Drivers Club, Queen Square, Bristol

I have only owned one BMW and it was a red M5 not too dissimilar to the one above, I gave mine up in favour of a much older and sedate Volvo 244DL, before I was tempted to loose my driving licence.

Chevrolet Corvette, Avenue Drivers Club, Queen Square, Bristol

The owner of this C4 Corvette is also our motor club social secretary at the time of writing he had already traded the Corvette in for a Ford Mustang fourth generation Mustang.

Ford SVT Lightening, Avenue Drivers Club, Queen Square, Bristol

Fords second generation SVT Lightening Pick Up is based on the F-150 but with lowered suspension, a supercharged motor giving 380 hp when the model above was built and a 4 speed automatic transmission sourced from the V10/diesel Super Duty pick-up.

Porsche Boxter Speedster, Avenue Drivers Club, Queen Square, Bristol

Finally my friend Ted who started the year with a Porsche GT2 swapped it for an Aston Martin has now bought this fabulous Porsche Boxster Speedster.

Thanks for joining me on this “Coffee, Croissant & Cars #11/13” edition of “Gettin’ a li’l psycho on cars, I hope you will join me again tomorrow when I be looking at a Plymouth Fury Station Wagon. Don’t forget to come back now !

Mr Consistency – Hillsborough Concours d’Elegance

Last month Geoffrey Horton trailered his immaculate Jaguar XK140 FHC SE/MC over to Hillsborough for the Concours d’Elegance, while he was there he kindly took today’s photographs to share with us.

Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport, Hillsborough Concours d'Elegance

Among the many participants was this magnificent supercharged Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Grand Sport of the type than won the Mille Miglia in 1929 an 1930 and the Spa 24 Hours race, so far as I know no one has ever come up with a definitive reason why these cars raced with front red light covers, if you know please chime in below.

Cadillac V16,Hillsborough Concours d'Elegance

Another car from 1930 was this Cadillac V16, first V16 powered car to enter production in 1930, which lasted until 1940.

Bentley 3 1/2 litre, Thrupp & Maberly,Hillsborough Concours d'Elegance

The plaque in front of this 1934 Derby built Bentley 3 1/2 litre with coachwork by Thrupp & Maberly says that it was built for Lord Feversham, I believe he may also have been known as the 3rd Earl of Feversham a politician who served as the Conservative government whip in the House of Lords at the time the car was built.

Jaguar XK120 DHC, Hillsborough Concours d'Elegance

Among the stuff competition in Geoffrey’s class was the Jaguar XK12O DHC.

Allard K2, Hillsborough Concours d'Elegance

Only just noticed this 1951 Allard K2 has appeared on this blog before, Jay Wollenberger snapped it at last years Danville Concours d’Elegance.

Ford 500 Sunliner, Hillsborough Concours d'Elegance

In my mind, anyone driving around in a gargantuan land yacht like this 1957 Ford 500 Sunliner just has to have a smile on their face, if they don’t it should be made compulsory.

AC Bristol Ace Zagato, Hillsborough Concours d'Elegance

Several vehicles with Zagato bodies were present like this 1957 Bristol powered AC Ace. This unique car, as in only one, with trade mark Zagato double bubble roof apparently counts Grand Prix race winner Jo “Seppi” Siffert amoungst it’s previous owners.

Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato, Hillsborough Concours d'Elegance

Despite having covered enough laps to finish 9th at Le Mans in 1961 Frenchman Jean Kerguen and Jacques Dewes retired from the race and therefore recorded a did not finish in this 1961 Aston Martin DB4 GT one of only 19 built with a Zagato body.

ALFA Romeo, Giulietta Sprint Special, Hillsborough Concours d'Elegance

Launched in 1959 the ALFA Romeo Giulietta Sprint Special was built as production racing car to compete against the likes of Porsche’s 356, the example seen here was built in 1966.

Jaguar XK140 FHC SE, Hillsborough Concours d'Elegance

Finally our man Geoffrey got to drive up the ramp of honour to collect a second place finish with his Jaguar XK140 FHC. Belated congratulations and many thanks to him for sharing his photographs.

Americana – Palo Alto Concours d’Elegance

At the back end of June Geoffrey Horton attended the Palo Alto Concours d’Elegance, apparently there was some confusion during the prize giving thanks what appears to have been a break down in communication between the judges and marshalls which left Geoffrey unsure if he and his Jaguar XK 140 had won a prize, if so which one, or not.

Packard, Palo Alto Concours d'Elegance

Among the photo’s Geoffrey kindly sent me were several of US built machines, above a Packard which I believe might be a 1936 One-Twenty though I’ll gladly take a second opinion the top mounted wipers appear to be the most useful clue as to the date.

Cadillac, Palo Alto Concours d'Elegance

The script above the front fender trim on this Cadillac combined with the old school tail dating back to pre 1939/45 war makes this a 1947 model year and I’ll hazard a guess it’s big enough to be a Cadillac 62, if you know different do not hesitate to chime in below.

Oldsmobile Eighty Eight, Palo Alto Concours d'Elegance

The squarish liberally chrome decorated 1958 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight is relatively simple to identify, not the James Bond gadget like fuel filler hidden by the tail light.

Buick Le Sabre, Palo Alto Concours d'Elegance

Above a fine example of a 1959 Buick Le Sabre basks in the sun, unfathomably, with the roof up !

Pontiac Grand Prix, Palo Alto Concours d'Elegance

Finally the windscreen of the 1964 Pontiac Grand Prix above displayed a certificate confirming that at least 90% of this vehicle remains within it’s factory new originality, finish and condition.

My thanks to Geoffrey for sharing today’s photographs.

Thanks for joining me on today’s “Americana” edition of “Gettin’ a li’l psycho on tyres”, I hope you will join me again tomorrow when I’ll be looking at some of the Ferrari’s at Palo Alto. Don’t forget to come back now !

Hatched In Germany – Cadillac Catera

In 1994 Opel launched a new Omega ‘B’ model that replaced the Omega ‘A’ model that had served as the basis of the Vauxhall Lotus Carlton which I looked at on Saturday. The Omega B was still rear wheel drive but had a much smoother body that formed the basis on the Vauxhall Omega in the UK and was launched with the aid of Cindy Crawford in the USA as the Cadillac Catera.

Cadillac Catera, Summer Classics, Easter Compton

Cadillac Cateras were powered by a 200hp V6 motor with pistons angled at an unusual 54 degrees, the motors gained a reputation for expensive cam belt tensioner bearing failures.

Cadillac Catera, Summer Classics, Easter Compton

Sales of the Catera peaked at around 25,000 in 1997 and 1998 but tailed off thereafter and the model was discontinued from the Cadillac range in 2001

Cadillac Catera, Summer Classics, Easter Compton

Today’s featured vehicle seen ar last summers “Summer Classics” gathering at Easter Compton is registered officially as a top of the range Vauxhall Omega Elite and has most likely had the Cadillac exterior identifications including the grill fitted post production.

Cadillac of Tomorrow – Cadillac Sedan de Ville

In 1985 Cadillac launched it’s downsized sixth generation Sedan de Ville model with the strap line “Cadillac of Tomorrow“.

Cadillac Sedan de Ville, Classics at the Castle, Sherborne Castle

The sixth generation Sedan de Ville was a radical departure from the previous models bearing the same name featuring the old V8 engine and gearbox but both were now transversely mounted because they were driving the front wheels instead of the rear.

Cadillac Sedan de Ville, Classics at the Castle, Sherborne Castle

Despite the reduction in external dimensions interior dimension remained similar to the fifth Sedan de Ville model.

Cadillac Sedan de Ville, Classics at the Castle, Sherborne Castle

From the any angle the Sedan de Ville does not look that different to the Volvo 760 first seen in 1982.

Cadillac Sedan de Ville, Classics at the Castle, Sherborne Castle

Due to an extended model year that started in April 1984 over 200,000 1985 Sedan de Villes were built, the sixth Generation model continued in production until 1993.
