Power Adjustable Pedals – Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor

In 1992 the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor also known as the CVPI, P71 and Crown Vic replaced the police package Ford LTD Crown Victoria which had been available to Law enforcement agencies since 1983.

Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, Classics At The Castle, Sherborne Castle

Like it’s LTD Crown Vic predecessor the new model was built with a cheap and easy to maintain separate body and chassis and a 251 hp V8 driving the rear wheels which provided handling characteristics preferred by law enforcement agencies over front wheel drive vehicles.

First generation CVPI’s were built between 1992 and 1997 by which time the CVPI’s closest rival the Chevrolet Caprice was discontinued to be replaced by front wheel drive models.

Despite it’s virtual monopoly on frame over body vehicles Ford introduced an upgraded second generation CVPI with slightly more conservative less rounded styling, in line with it’s other Crown Victoria models in 1997.

It was not until 1999 that the Police Interceptor badge replaced the Crown Victoria badge on the boot / trunk lid.

For 2001 Interceptors, including today’s featured 2001 example seen at Classics at the Castle in Sherborne, were given Power Adjustable Pedals to more easily accommodate height diversity among Law Enforcement officers using these vehicles. The CVPI model was discontinued in 2010 as was the regular Crown Victoria.

This particular CVPI belongs to RRElite Ltd and is used for weddings, special occasions and Film work. It comes with a chauffeur in full replica LAPD police uniform who will arrest the bride and deliver her safely to the Church on time.

Hot Rover #3 – MG ZT-T

Like the MG ZR and MG ZS models the MG ZT was based on a Rover model in this case the Rover 75 and like the smaller ZR and ZS it was launched in 2001 and face lifted in 2004.

MG ZT-T, The Classic Motor Show, NEC, Birmingham

The ZT-T is the estate / station wagon version of the ZT and today’s face lifted car is said to have been completed on the 20th of January at 13:19 making it the 11th ZT to be built in 2004.

MG ZT-T, The Classic Motor Show, NEC, Birmingham

The cars chassis plate shows this car to have been intended to be biomorphic green however it was finished in shot silk chromescent, like only two other ZT-T models, one of which also has a chassis plate showing the intended colour was biomorphic green.

MG ZT-T, The Classic Motor Show, NEC, Birmingham

On 5th April 2004 the car was registered to MG Rovers Press Fleet and was subsequently used by MG Director Dr Chris Millard who had many updates and extras retro fitted to keep the car up to date with all the latest developments barring an electric sunroof.

MG ZT-T, The Classic Motor Show, NEC, Birmingham

Shot Silk Chromescent paintwork was part of MG Rovers Monogram Personalisation Programme which offered customers an exclusive opportunity for MG and Rover customers to realise their personality through automotive style.

MG ZT-T, The Classic Motor Show, NEC, Birmingham

Power for this car comes from a 129hp Turbo Diesel motor which is connected to a 5 speed automatic transmission which gives a rest to 60 mph time of 11.4 seconds and a maximum speed of 117 mph.

MG ZT-T, The Classic Motor Show, NEC, Birmingham

Just over a month after MG Rover called in the receivers in April 2005 ownership of this ZT-T transferred to the Royal Bank of Scotland before being sold on to a salesman.

My thanks to The Rover 75 and MG ZT Owners Club for the details about today’s car which is seen at the The Classic Motor Show held at the NEC, Birmingham a couple of weeks ago.

Hot Rover #2 – MG ZS

The MG ZS was the second prong of Rover MG’s three pronged attack on the market for hot vehicles launched in 2001 alongside the MG ZR I looked at last week.

MG ZS, Goodwood Revival

The ancestry of the MG ZS can be traced back to fifth generation Honda Civic, the floor pan of which Rover used to build the Rover 400 model which when face lifted became the Rover 45.

MG ZS, Goodwood Revival

The ZS was made available with a range of tuned motors from the Rover 45 and a tuned 175hp version of the 2.5 litre / 152 cui V6 from the larger Rover 75.

MG ZS, Goodwood Revival

The 2001 vehicle seen here at the Goodwood Revival last year is the model topping ZS 180 with the 175 hp V6 that gives the ZS a rest to 60 mph time 7.3 seconds and top speed of 139 mph. The ZS 180 has larger brakes discs and brake calipers than all of the other ZS models.

MG ZS, Goodwood Revival

The Honda based chassis pan with double wishbone front suspension and multi link rear suspension proved eminently adaptable to switch from optimised for comfort settings required for Rover 45 customers to optimised for handling settings required for MG ZS customers which along with the ZS steering came in for praise from press when launched.

MG ZS, Goodwood Revival

The large rear spoiler was standard on ZS 180 models up until 2004 when the model was face lifted with a much smarter body kit.

Shopping Around #2 – Cadillac 6 Window Sedan

Last week I looked at the Cadillac Series 62 4 Window Hard Top Sedan, by coincidence just after I finished preparing that blog I came across this 6 Window Sedan at Easter Compton.

Cadillac, 6 Window Sedan, Summer Classics, Easter Compton

Unsurprisingly from the front the Flat Top 4 window and six window sedans look almost identical.

Cadillac, 6 Window Sedan, Summer Classics, Easter Compton

However from the side the difference can be seen in the sloping rear roof line of the six window model.

Cadillac, 6 Window Sedan, Summer Classics, Easter Compton

It was only when I got home that I realised that today’s featured car is missing the tell tail the small badge below the arrow behind the front wheel on the front wing / fender which distinguishes a Series 62 ‘6229’ from the ‘6329’ de Ville 6 window Sedan which would be identified by small chrome ‘Cadillac de Ville’ lettering above the chrome arrow on the tail wing / fender.

Cadillac, 6 Window Sedan, Summer Classics, Easter Compton

The difference in the basic price when new between the two models was $418, if you know what the extra cost gave you apart from a difference in the badges already mentioned please chime in below.

Energy Absorbing Bumpers – Cadillac Sedan de Ville

The fourth generation Cadillac Sedan de Ville which was launched in 1971 took the full size GM body to a new peak in width that would not be equalled until the 1990’s.

Cadillac Sedan de Ville, Castle Combe, C&SCAD

With 62.1 inches shoulder room at the front 64 inches at the rear at 6′ tall I could probably sleep quite comfortably on the back seat for a night if I had to.

Cadillac Sedan de Ville, Castle Combe, C&SCAD

In order to set this 5000lb leviathan in motion a 375hp 7.7 litre 427 cui single overhead cam motor was fitted to the 1973 model seen here, come 1975 this would be replaced by an 8.2 litre 500 cui motor.

Cadillac Sedan de Ville, Castle Combe, C&SCAD

1973 saw the introduction of energy absorbing bumpers as required by new federal laws, the gargantuan Sedan de Ville is one of the few designs which swallowed up these requirements without any adverse affects to it’s aesthetics.

Cadillac Sedan de Ville, Castle Combe, C&SCAD

Production of the 1973 Sedan de Ville set a new record at 216,243.

I hope you will join me in wishing former Sedan de Ville owner Marblehead Dale ‘Grilled Cheese Gator’ Glebe a Happy Birthday.

Pop Up Swansong – Ferrari 456M

The Ferrari 456 launched in 1995 was the long awaited V12 powered 2+2 replacement for the Ferrari 412 GT which had been out of production since 1989.

Ferrari 456M, Silverstone Classic

During the intervening 6 years if you wanted a 2+2 Ferrari you had to make do with the mid engine 8 cylinder Mondial 2+2.

Ferrari 456M, Silverstone Classic

Ferrari reentered the front engine rear wheel drive GT market with a V12 that owed nothing to the Ferrari 412 but was derived from the 65 degree Ferrari Dino V6 motor which in V12 form with 4 valves per cylinder and two overhead camshafts could produce an unstressed 436hp.

Ferrari 456M, Silverstone Classic

In 1998 the 456 was upgraded to 456M (Modificata) spec, externally distinguishable by the fog lights mounted in the grill, like the 1999 example seen here earlier this year at the Siverstone Classic.

Ferrari 456M, Silverstone Classic

456M spec motors were said to be good for an even smother 442hp thanks in part to a change in the firing order of the 12 cylinders and in part to the improved Bosch electronic engine management system.

Ferrari 456M, Silverstone Classic

There are a number of extremely rare variations on the 456 platform, these include two four door saloon / sedans built for the mysterious Nafsas Al Khaddaja allegedly resident in Belgium.

Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei is said to have ordered 7 456 GT Venice 4 door shooting brakes, but found he only had $9 million dollars in spare change when it was time to pay for them so only took six of them home without any change.

The Sultan of Brunei had two 456 Spyders built while Mike Tyson had an aftermarket Spyder conversion on his.

Finally there is Shaquille O’Neal’s example which features a number of aftermarket modifications to accommodate his 7′ 1″ frame including much longer seat rails and a unique, for a 456, targa top.

Ferrari 456M, Silverstone Classic

The 456M was the last Ferrari to feature pop up headlights which were no longer necessary at the time the car was launched in 1995, but remained since they had been a requirement at the time the design of the model commenced. In all 3,289 456 variants had been produced when production switched to the 612 Scaglietti in 2003.

Fellow blogger Jay Wollenweber spotted the older 458 model on the sunny streets of San Ramon recently.

Comic Discovery – Hudson Suburban Sedan

Back on Independence Day during the Rally organised by the Bristol Pegasus Motor Club I came across this delightful 1935 Hudson, unfortunately I did not get any details about the car from the owner at the time so I have had another carcaeology session to discover more.

Hudson Big Six, Model 53

This Hudson chassis #533370, with blue body work probably marketed as Surban Sedan model, was one of just four vehicles first registered in Dundee, where the strap line reads City of Discovery, on the 7th of May 1935.

Hudson Big Six, Model 35

The Hudson was registered to a Mr R D Low of Westleigh, Number 9 Nevill Street, Downfield, Dundee alongside a Morris Saloon, BSA Motorcycle and a 3 ton Commer Coal merchants truck.

Hudson Big Six, Model 35

Robert Duncan Low is known to have been a journalist to the Dundee City Archive, but as we know journalism can cover a multitude of sins and it would appear that Robert was no gum shoe rather he was employed by DC Thompson & Co in Dundee where he was responsible for launching a number of publications aimed at children including Adventure (1921) The Rover (1922) The Wizzard (1923) The Skipper (1930) and The Hotspur (1933).

Hudson Big Six, Model 35

In 1937 Robert became managing editor at DC Thompson and over saw the launch of The Dandy and the following year the Beano for which with artist Ken Reid he created Roger the Dodger in 1953, when he also oversaw the launch of The Topper. Earlier in his career Robert is also credited with co creating the Scottish vernacular comic strips Oor Wullie and The Broons with illustrator Dudley Dexter Watkins.

Hudson Big Six, Model 35

It is not at present known how long Robert Low kept this Hudson he died in 1980 aged 85. This car is reported to have been ‘knocking around the North West of England in the 1990’s’ before it was offered at auction in 2005 when the body was painted maroon and sold for £1,500. The history of the cars original ownership outlined above appears to have been unknown to the auctioneers at the time when the car was noted to have had 4 previous owners with 92,275 miles shown on the clock and the model name was given as Big Six Saloon, the chassis number indicated the car would have been known as a 53 model at the Hudson factory from whence it was probably sent as a knockdown kit for assembly in Brentford west of London.

Hudson Big Six, Model 35

According to the best source I have available 29,476 cars were shipped and it is thought that number included the knockdown kits.

My thanks to John MacDonald form ‘oldcarandtruckpictures.com‘, Jon B, Terraplane 33, Geoff C NZ, Alex ‘Hudsontech’ Burr, Old Fogey UK and Paul Butler over at Hudson Forum who helped me identify this car and finally to Richard Cullen at the Dundee City Archive who provided the final clue as to the original owners identity.

Thanks for joining me on this comic edition of “Gettin’ a li’l psycho on tyres” I hope you will join me again tomorrow. Don’t forget to come back now !
