Ever Living Boneshaker – Lohner Porsche Semper Vivus

Ferdinand Porsche was born to German speaking parents in Maffersdorf now in the Czech Republic in 1875 and showed a strong interest in and aptitude for technology at an early age. Before he left home for Vienna at 18 Ferdinand had installed his parents house with the first electric light system in Maffersdorf.

In Vienna Porsche worked for Bella Egger & Co., a company specialising in electrical products which is better known to day as Brown Boveri. After only a couple years Porsche had been promoted to a management position before joining the newly created Electric Car Department at Hofwagenfabrik Jacob Lohner & Co., a Vienna-based company part of the Austro-Hungarian military industrial complex.

While at Lohner Porsche took up a ten year old idea by American inventor Wellington Adams to develop electric hub motor’s for a prototype all wheel drive electric Lohner buses.

Lohner Porsche Semper Vivus, Goodwood Revival

His Lohner Porsche System was received with great acclaim in 1898 and a modified vehicle was ordered by British coach builder EW Hart which was to incorporate a petrol motor to act as a generator for the electric motors to extend the vehicles range.

Lohner Porsche Semper Vivus, Goodwood Revival

The completed vehicle weighing in at some 4 tons was delivered on time in 1900 and was used to compete in an electric vehicle endurance trial from which the driver Ferdinand Porsche had to retire with a severe cold brought on by the extreme wet weather.

Lohner Porsche Semper Vivus, Goodwood Revival

The 1900 Lohner-Porsche “Semper Vivus” (Ever Living) model employed two front electric hub motors each giving over 25 hp that are powered by batteries and two de Dion Boulton petrol motors each connected to generators which can be used to power the electric hub motors direct and charge the batteries, making the three ton “Semper Vivus” one of the earliest examples of a duel fuel vehicle.

Lohner Porsche Semper Vivus, Goodwood Revival

Sitting 6 feet off the ground the driver has an excellent view off the road, however steering a Semper Vivus, with those heavy hub motors, will not impress anybody on a school run,

Lohner Porsche Semper Vivus, Goodwood Revival

neither will the unsprung rear axle and so the Semper Vivus never went into production and so did not quite live up to it’s “Ever Living” moniker.

The recreation seen here at Goodwood Festival of Speed was built 111 years after the original in a collaboration between The Porsche Museum and Hubert Drescher it took four years to complete and is said to have the same performance as the original.

Thanks for joining me on this “Ever Living Boneshaker” edition of “Gettin’ a li’l psycho on tyres” I hope you will join me again tomorrow when I’ll be looking at Williams 2013 Formula One challenger.

Slightly Reduced Boost – Ford F-150 Supercharged Harley Davidson

Those watching the 1996 Super Bowl on TV will have been among the first to be introduced to the 1997 Ford F-150 in a catchy commercial featuring Jack Palance in which his F-150 is depicted as being strong enough to pull the two sides of the Grand Canyon together.

Featuring improved aerodynamics, larger interior and improved fuel economy powered by either Taurus/Windstar V6 or Crown Victoria V8 motors, the tenth generation Ford F-150 went on sale in late 1996, it was the first all new ground up design for the model since 1980

Ford introduced the Harley Davidson Edition in 2000 with a four door SuperCab and standard bed, the following year the Harley Davidson Edition featured a longer SuperCrew cab and shorter bed.

In 2002 a slightly detuned 340 hp version of the Triton Supercharged V8 used in the 380 hp F-150 SVT Lightening was added to the Harley Davidson Edition.

The detuning was achieved by adding a slightly larger pulley to the supercharger which slightly reduced the boost pressure.

Keypad entry systems date at least back to the 1981 Lincoln Town Car, I don’t recall ever seeing one before on vehicle in the UK before, so it was a surprise to find this on a 2002 model.

Aside from the external badging, front fog lamps and chrome side bars the Harley Davidson Edition F-150 came with black or dark shadow grey paint, accented by an orange pinstripe, leather interior trim and chrome 20 inch wheels.

Interior Harley Davidson Edition features also include chrome steering column stalks door releases and seat leavers, unique Harley Davidson spun metal instrument cluster with 130 mph speedometer and a sequenced VIN plate on the center console.

Harley Davidson Editions are said to have accounted for 1 to 2 percent of F-150 sales and the model seems to have divided opinions, F-150 and Harley Davidson owners had their opinions of the brands was reaffirmed, some HD owners switched from Chevy to Ford Pick Ups while some Ford owners who were not bikers thought the Harley Davidson Edition was a cheesy gimmick, that the tie between the two brands lasted twelve years is a testament to the fact both brands on balance benefited.

Nice Competition – Fiberfab Bonito

Today’s self build special is a Fibrefab Bonito which I believe was designed to be built around a Volkswagen Beetle floor pan suspension and brakes with the motor mounted behind the rear axle.

Fiberfab FT Bonito, Rare Breeds, Haynes International Motor Museum

Fibrefab was a self build manufacturer founded by Warren “Bud” Goodwin in 1964 manufacturing a range of parts including body panels moving onto building kits for owners to assemble into complete cars.

Fiberfab FT Bonito, Rare Breeds, Haynes International Motor Museum

The Bonito, Avenger GT and Valkyrie are three of the many models from Fibrefab that to a greater or less extent resembled the Ford GT prototype racing cars.

Fiberfab FT Bonito, Rare Breeds, Haynes International Motor Museum

This particular Bonito, first registered as a Special in 1986, was found in a back garden where it had stood for 12 years. It has been built up into what is believed to be the only competition Bonito, in the UK, for use on stage rallies by Gary Candy.

Fiberfab FT Bonito, Rare Breeds, Haynes International Motor Museum

Unusually for a Bonito, the rear mounted 50 hp aircooled VW Beetle motor had been discarded in favour of a watercooled Volkswagen Golf / Corrado motor that is equally unusually mounted ahead of the rear axle.

Fiberfab FT Bonito, Rare Breeds, Haynes International Motor Museum

In 1983 Warren “Bud” Goodwin sold Fiberfab to Classic Motor Carriages a company that had to close after a legal action in 1994 involving “several hundred” customers.

Fiberfab FT Bonito, Rare Breeds, Haynes International Motor Museum

It would appear that a body was obtained by a company called ACM in the UK which was subsequently re engineered by Seraph Ltd to fit on a ladder frame with the motor in the front, this vehicle is known either as the ACM Excalibur, not to be confused with the Excalibur Roadster built in Milwaukee, or Seraph 3000.

My thanks to Bloggsworth, jcbc3, Elansprint72, Ray Bell, Michael Ferner and johnthebridge, at The Nostalgia Forum for their help in trying to identify the motor.

Volvo Survivor – Ferrari 750 Monza #0538M

Seriously regular GALPOT may remember a Ferrari Friday in March 2011 in which I posted a photograph taken in 1956 by Road & Track photographer Carlisle Blackwell featuring a Ferrari 750 Monza on the 20th Century Fox back lot.

Ferrari 750 Monza, Blackhawk Museum

Geoffrey Horton caught up with the car chassis #0538 at the Blackhawk last year and while I have no new information about the car I thought you might enjoy looking at the one off low nose body which original owner Mr Paravano is rumoured to have paid Scaglietti well over the odds for.

Ferrari 750 Monza, Blackhawk Museum

Soon after #0538M was purchased by William Shaker for $600,000 with a Chevrolet V8 installed the car is said have gone on an unmanned trip down Mr Shakers drive and come to rest against his Volvo, ironically Volvo is Latin for “I roll”.

Ferrari 750 Monza, Blackhawk Museum

I have not been able to establish which, if indeed any, of the Ferrari’s panels were damaged in the incident.

Ferrari 750 Monza, Blackhawk Museum

Another mystery as yet unresolved is who was seen at the wheel of #0538M when Carlisle Blackwell took the photo’s of it for the cover of Road & Track in December 1956 ?

If you recognise him please do not hesitate to chime in below.

My thanks to Geoffrey Horton for sharing his photographs from the Blackhawk Museum and Pamela Blackwell for permission to use her fathers photograph.

An Ocean Of Crown Vics – Ford LTD Crown Victoria

The saying in the li’l ol’ England was that everything in the USA and indeed North America was bigger than anything ever seen in Europe and to a greater or lesser extent that was verified on my first trip to North America in 1988, the buildings the cars and even the average height and build of the people seemed to dwarf anything I was exposed to on a regular basis in London or anywhere else in Europe.

Ford LTD Crown Victoria, Indiana State Police, Indianapolis Motor Speedway

What I was not expecting on my 24 hour trip from Toronto to Indianapolis for the Indy 500 was the overwhelming number of race fans camped out in every suburban nook and cranny surrounding Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In Europe most race tracks don’t attract even half of the 250,000 fans IMS can hold and even then the fans are usually spread out over several miles of country side and so never approach the kind of concentration seen at Indy.

I had expected a pretty wild, read friendly if a little drunk, crowd and was not disappointed, though I am glad I did not take my girl friend with me, I think she may have felt just a little intimidated by the rowdy vibe. Soon after getting into the IMS infield just after dawn on race day I found an apparent ocean of Indiana State Police pre’88 face lift Ford LTD Crown Victoria’s and was so impressed with the scale of the law enforcement presence I took the photo above.

The pre ’88 face lift Ford LTD Crown Victoria, also known as the Crown Vic was launched in 1983, from what I have been able to discern police package Crown Vic’s were available either 160 hp 5 litre / 302 cui EFI V8’s or 180 hp 5.7 litre / 351 cui HO V8’s driving through four speed AOD (Automatic Overdrive) transmissions around 1987, never enough to beat the Chevrolet Caprice in the Michigan State Police tests run at Michigan International Speedway, but close enough to keep the order books open until the introduction of the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor in 1992.

These cars were particularly popular with law enforcement agencies because they were rear wheel drive, RWD, having a perceived more predictable handling and because they featured a separate chassis onto which the body was attached offering the advantage of lower repair costs because the chassis was less likely to get damaged in inevitable collisions which law enforcement work would expose these vehicles to.

Thanks for joining me on this “A Field Full Of Crown Vics” edition of “Gettin’ a li’l psycho on tyres” I hope you will join me again tomorrow for Ferrari Friday. Don’t forget to come back now !

Reliability Dividend – Marussia Cosworth MR02

In 2009 John Booth’s Manor Grand Prix was one of three teams selected to join the Formula One™ Chmpionship series in 2010, by which time the team had change it’s name to Virgin Racing in deference to their principle backer the Virgin budget airline.

Marussia Cosworth MR02, Young Driver Test, Silverstone

None of the three new teams did particularly well in 2010 and Virgin racing finished the season with the Championships would spoon for scoring a seaoson high two 14th place finishes like Hispania Racing F1 Team (HRT) but with only one 15th place were unable to match the Spanish teams three 15th place finishes.

Marussia Cosworth MR02, Autosport International, NEC, Birmingham

In 2011 Russian automobile manufacturer and sponsor Marussia’s increased involvement in the team was recognised by a change of name to Marussia Virgin Racing but the team finished the season with a second consecutive wooden spoon with three season high 15th place finishes unable to match the single 13 th place finish scored by HRT.

Marussia Cosworth MR02, British GP P1, Silverstone

In 2012 the team became known as the Marussia F1 Team as Virgin ceased it’s involvement after two disappointing years. With two season high 14th place race finishes Marussia finally bested HRT who could only manage a season high 15th place race finishes before the Spanish team folded at the season’s end.

Rookies Jules Bianchi, seen above during Practice Session 1 (P1) of the British Grand Prix and Max Chilton, seen during the Young Driver Test below joined Marussia for 2013.

Marussia also hired former Renault Technical Director Pat Symonds to act as a consultant and employed input from McLaren Applied Technologies wind tunnel on their MR02 design.

Marussia Cosworth MR02, González, Young Driver Test, Silverstone

By now Marrusia were the only team still using the most affordable but unfancied Cosworth V8 spec motors, closest rivals Caterham having switched to Renault power in 2011. Venezuelan test driver Rodolfo González is seen driving the Marussia Cosworth MR02 during the Young Driver Test at Silverstone above.

Marussia Cosworth MR02, Autosport International, NEC, Birmingham

Despite regularly qualifying behind the Renault powered Caterhams Jules managed not only to regularly out qualify team mate Max but against expectations Max also finished a season high 13th in Malaysia which turned out to be enough to save Marussia from regaining the Formula One wooden spoon in 2013.

Marussia Cosworth MR02, Autosport International, NEC, Birmingham

Max meanwhile became the first rookie in the history of Formula One to finish every race of the entire season, Jules had three retirements, a finishing feat only matched in 2013 by seasoned McLaren drivers Jenson Button and Sergio Perez.

Marussia Cosworth MR02, Chilton, British GP P2, Silverstone

For the first time in the teams history Marussia will keep the same driver line up for 2014 while much else changes, Pat Symonds has been snapped up by the, relative to their own Championship winning standards, struggling Williams team.

So far we know that Marussia will employ a Ferrari power train on the 2014 MR03 design, to keep abreast of Marussia’s developments you might try joining the fastest growing Formula One Team facebook page on this link or try Marussia’s official web site here.
