Ferraris At The Castle – Sherborne Castle

A couple of weeks ago David Roots kindly invited me to join him at last weekends Classics at the Castle in Sherborne and today’s post is dedicated to a hand full of the many Ferrari’s present.

Ferrari Enzo, Classics at the Castle, Sherborne

While waiting to meet David I heard the unmistakeable wail of a highly tuned V12 approaching and just had time to whip out my camera to capture this ’04, as listed by the DVLA, Ferrari Enzo. Enzo aficionado’s will of course know only one Enzo, the 400th and final one, was built in ’04 and that red car was donated to the Vatican for a charity auction, which means this car imported into the UK in 2004 must have been built in ’02 or ’03.

Not far behind the Enzo came this ’03 Ferrari 360 Spider, it was a day approaching 20 degrees centigrade when this photo was taken, one wonders how much heat the owner needs before being persuaded to lower the roof !

Next a couple of Maranello Yellow Spiders came by with their roofs down an F430 leading a 360.

Oldest of the Ferrari’s I saw present was this 1961 Ferrari 250 GT/E chassis #2245GT.

With 50hp more than the Enzo and keeping things bang up to date was this 2014 F12berlinetta.

The F40 “MAD40F” is officially registered at the DVLA with a spelling mistake, type the registration number and select Ferrari from the drop down menu on this linked website and you will get no further details, but select “Other” from the drop down menu and type in “Ferari”, and you will see this is a 1991 model.

Ferraris On The Green – Niello Concours At Serrano

Continuing our look at some of the cars at Niello Concours at Serrano which I started on Wednesday and will conclude next Wednesday here are some of the Ferrari’s present as seen by Karl Krause.

Ferrari 328 GTS, Niello Concours at Serrano

There are many older Ferrari’s in the USA than this Ferrari 328 GTS, but I found this interesting article about a Ferrari 328 GTS owner in Poland, where his car is amongst the oldest Ferrari’s in the country.

Despite the fact I’ve never held any leaning towards the game of golf or golfers to whom the Ferrari 550 above is aimed at with it’s boot trunk big enough to take a golf bag I have always been a fan of the Ferrari 550 because the engine is in the correct end of the car.

While looking for unusual info on the Ferrari 360 like the one above I found this fascinating topical tip on how to increase the range of of the key alarm fob from two feet to 40 feet for free on facebook of all places.

MG used to run ads with the strap line “your mother would not like it”, same applies to a matt black Ferrari 360 in my humble opinion, I guess that is a good reason to re-examine my aversion to the combination.

Finally the Ferrari 458 Italia is without question the best looking Ferrari I’ve seen for a long time, wonder if I’ll ever get bored drooling over them.

Ferrari Friday – 9th Danville Concours d’Elegance

Geoffrey Horton attended this years 9th Danville Concours d’Elegance last month and kindly shared today’s collection of Ferrari photographs.

Moving forward a couple of decades the Ferrari F355 was fitted with a Japanese starter motor in an attempt to bring the marque up to compete with and beat the Honda NSX on price, reliability and handling when it was launched in 1994.

If stealth is your rocks your boat I guess matt black is the way to go, but I’m not sure I could ever get used to it, matt black to me looks like the new primer, something unfinished or a work in progress which is I am sure the last thing I’d think of in the event I ever bought a Ferrari 458 Italia Coupé.

Despite being launched last year to replace the Ferrari 599, I still have not come across a Ferrari F12berlinetta like the one above, I must get round to making an appointment with my local stockist.

Company Car – Ferrari 360 Spider

GALPOT regulars may remember me posting a blog on the Ferrari 360 Spider last year, I have revisited this model, built in 2000, in honour of the original owner of this car, Ross Brawn team principle of Mercedes AMG Formula One team who’s driver Nico Rosberg won his and the teams first victory in China last weekend.

Ferrari 360 Spider, Haynes IMM

Ross, from Manchester England, became interested in engineering at the Belle Vue Stadium, Britain’s first oval track dating back to 1926, where he attended a variety of short track events.

After a spell with the Atomic Energy Research Establishment in Harwell Oxfordshire where he studied instrumentation, Ross joined the race car manufacturer March Engineering where he worked as a milling machine operator and later as a race mechanic.

In 1978 Ross joined Williams as a machinist progressing through the Williams R&D and aerodynamics departments.
After spells with the Haas Lola and Arrow’s Grand Prix teams Ross moved to the Jaguar Sports Car team and was credited as the lead designer of the Jaguar XJR 14 which won the 1991 World Sports Car Championship.

Later in 1991 Ross became technical director at Benetton where he was joined by rising star Micheal Schumacher with whom he designed strategies to win the 1994 & 1995 World Drivers Championship and 1995 World Constructors Championships.

Towards the end of 1996 Ross joined Micheal at Ferrari, along with Benetton’s designer Rory Bryne to form a ‘Dream Team’ that won World Constructors Championships from 1999 to 2005 and the World Drivers Championships for Micheal Schumacher from 2000 – 2004.

After taking a sabbatical in 2007 Ross Brawn joined the under performing Honda team and spent the 2008 season developing the teams 2009 challenger only for Honda to withdraw from Grand Prix racing at the end of 2008 amidst global economic chaos.

Incredibly Ross managed to put together a deal to save the Honda team with a management buyout and secured a deal to use Mercedes engines for his newly rebranded Brawn GP team. The new car was a cracker right out of the box winning no less than six of it’s first seven races in the hands of Jenson Button who won the 2009 World Drivers title and with two additional wins from Rubens Barrichello Brawn secured the 2009 constructors title.

The following year Daimler Benz bought into Brawn GP and the team was rebranded again to Mercedes GP. The team, with Ross Brawn remaining as team principle, managed to tempt Micheal Schumacher out of a three years of retirement to join Nico Rosberg. After two years of relative under performance Mercedes finally won it’s first race the Chinese Grand Prix last weekend.

The victory was the first for a Mercedes vehicle since the 1955 Italian GP won by Juan Manuel Fangio.

Road Legal Ferrari’s A Brief History – Niello Serrano Concours

For Ferrari Friday GALPOT continues yesterdays perusal of vehicles on display at the Niello Serrano Concours thanks to Geoffrey Hortons photographs.

Ferrari 250 GTE 2 + 2, Niello Serrano Concours

First up a Ferrari 250 GT/E 2+2, one these models was Enzo Ferrari’s daily driver, early GALPOT readers may remember such a vehicle appearing in a previous blog, albeit modified into a replica 250 GT SWB Competizione.

Ferrari 275 GTS, Niello Serrano Concours

More exclusive, one of just 200 models built between 1965 and 1968, is this Ferrari 275 GTS powered by a 3.3 litre / 201 cui V12.

Ferrari Dino, Niello Serrano Concours

The V6 Ferrari Dino had been in production for two years and two distinct series from 1969 to 1971 before the first Series III Dino’s were manufactured for the US market, this is one of 1,431 Series III Dinos produced between 1971 and 1974.

Ferrari 365 GTC/4, Niello Serrano Concours

Manufactured between 1971 and 1972 the Ferrari 365 GTC/4 is a 2+2. One of the 500 examples produced appeared in the 1977 film Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo alongside several other Ferraris including a slightly more powerful 365 GTB/4 Daytona with which the GTC/4 shares a common chassis.

Ferrari 328 GTS, Niello Serrano Concours

Representing Maranello’s prancing black horse for the 1980’s at Niello Serrano was this Ferrari 328 GTS of which some 7400 were manufactured between 1985 and 1989.

Ferrari 550, Niello Serrano Concours

Ferrari returned to manufacturing motor cars with the engine in front of the driver in 1996 with the beefy 550. With a boot / trunk large enough to carry a set of golf clubs the Ferrari 550 was turned into a handy racer at Le Mans by the likes of Prodrive.

Twentieth model in Ferraris catalogue of street legal exotics is the Ferrari 360 a model produced from 1999 – 2005 which you may remember from an earlier blog was made available with an optional Tubi Style exhaust to provide extra horsepower and amplify the sound.

Ferrari F430, Niello Serrano Concours

With a 200 mph top speed the Ferrari F430 that replaced the 360 in 2004 arguably had no need of gimmicks like optional Tubi Style exhausts. It looks good, sounds good and goes fast, pretty much everything one could want from a Ferrari except of course it’s replacement the F458 Italia.

Louder Option On Demand – Ferrari 360 Spider

Surprisingly the Ferrari F360 Spider introduced in 2000 was only Ferrari’s twentieth road going convertible model.

The aggressive timeless lines were drawn up by Pininfarina.

Despite the chassis strengthening required to maintain rigidity and safety of the all aluminium space frame the 360 Spider weighs only 60 kgs / 132 lbs more than the 360 Coupé upon which the Spider is based.

Power comes from a 400 hp 3.6 litre / 219 cui V8 fed fresh air by these side grills.

The electrically powered roof folds away between the roll bars and engine in just 20 seconds.

Options for the 360 Spider included a Tubi Style exhaust system which provided a modest increase in peak horse power and made the car sound louder.
