Designed and Assembled By Bertone – FIAT Super Strada Cabrio

The launch of the hatchback Volkswagen Golf to rave reviews and wild customer enthusiasm in 1974 left all the other big manufacturers wanting to cash in on the hatchback market that boomed with the arrival of the boxy little car from Wolfsburg.

FIAT’s response was to commission Bertone to design a completely new body to fit onto the chassis and running gear of 1970’s European Car Of The Year the front wheel drive FIAT 128.

The internal code for the new model was FIAT 138 but FIAT’s marketing department decided to give the car the Ritmo name in most non English speaking markets and Strada in most English speaking markets excluding the USA until the Italians found out that Ritmo was a US brand of non automotive product.

The Strada was launched in the UK with the strap line “Designed with a computer, silenced by a laser and built by robot” in 1978 and remained in production until 1988 with over a million units being manufactured. In 1982 the Ritmo / Strada range received the quad lamp face lift and further changes including large plastic side protection strips were introduced in 1985.

Just as Volkswagen had contracted Karmann to build the Golf Cabriolet, FIAT contracted Bertone to design and build a Cabriolet version of the Ritmo/Strada which was sold as the Bertone Cabrio in some markets but was registered as a FIAT with the authorities in the UK.

This particular 1.5 litre / 91.5 cui Super Strada Cabriolet, seen at the Bristol Italian Auto Moto Fest, was first registered in January 1985 and originally painted Metallic Brown with a Cream roof. It was repainted red and fitted with it’s current roof during a 15 year lay off from the road.

A Wedding Gift – Bugatti Type 57C Van Vooren Cabriolet #57808

Mohammad Rezâ Šâh Pahlavi third child, eldest son of Reza Pahlavi and his second wife, Tadj ol-Molouk aka the first Shah of the Iranian Pahlavi dynasty, himself acceded to the thrown to become the Royal head of Iran aged a month short of 22. His father abdicated rather than commit Iran to the allied war effort with support for an Iranian Corridor for the supply of allied weapons and provisions to the Russians who were engaged in a fierce conflict with the German forces on the Russian front.

Two years earlier Mohammad Rezâ Šâh Pahlavi married Egyptian Princess Fawzia Fuad daughter of King Fuad I of Egypt and Sudan until he was deposed 1952. As was and still is the custom, the marriage of a head of state in waiting gave numerous governments the opportunity to ingratiate themselves for future eventualities by presenting often unique wedding gifts showcasing the skills and talents of their citizens.

The French Government did this by commissioning Bugatti to build a supercharged 160hp Type 57C chassis #57808 and supplying it to the coach builders Van Vooren who were commissioned to build a 2 seat Cabriolet body for it.

The body designed by, French domiciled Ukranian, Jacques Saoutchik, with it’s closed in wheels appears to have been heavily inspired by the other noted French coach building house Figoni et Falaschi, but had some original features including a windscreen that could be lowered into the front bulkhead and the roof which folded away completely from view below a rear interior panel.

In January 1979 the by now self styled Shah of Iran fled the peacock throne and the gathering Iranian Revolution which sought to place the exiled Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini as de facto head of state. The Shah left his Bugatti in the Royal Court of Iran and it was sold, allegedly for less than $300 by the Ayatullahs who found it and could easily have ordered it’s destruction.

The purchaser sent the car to the USA where it was fitted with an American V8 before #57808 found it’s way to experts in restoration Rod Jolly Coachbuilding in the UK where former Bugatti employee octogenarian Louis Giron is credited of taking care of the mechanical restoration.

I believe #57808, seen in these photographs at the Goodwood Festival of Speed is currently part of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.

Formula One Cabriolet – Ferrari 342 America, Vignale Cabriolet, #0232AL

Between late 1952 and early 1953 Ferrari built six 342 America chassis powered by a 200hp 4.1 litre / 341 cui version of Ferrari’s latest atmospheric induction V12 designed by Aurelio Lampredi and raced with success in the Ferrari 375 Formula One cars.

Five of the 342 chassis went to Pininfarina where 3 were fitted with coupé bodies and two with cabriolet bodies, the first chassis #0232AL, featured in today’s photographs by Geoffrey Horton taken at the Blackhawk Museum, was sent to Vignale where it was fitted with a cabriolet body.

Upon completion Herr Otto Wild of Muri in Switzerland. Before the end of the 1950’s were out the car is thought to have made it’s way to the USA, from 1971 until at least 2000 the car was kept in single ownership.

The 342 America was said to be capable of 115 mph, not quite on a par with the contemporary Jaguar XK120 in it’s original aluminium bodied form.

The Lampredi V12 motor would continue in production until the 1960’s powering Ferrari’s large engine America series cars up to and including the 500 Superfast of which the last was built in 1966.

Rosselini’s Racer – Ferrari 212 Inter Pininfarina Cabriolet #0235EU

Today’s featured Ferrari 212 Inter Pininfarina Cabriolet was built built primarily as a road car in 1952 it is one of only two 4 seat 212 Inter’s with a Pininfarina Cabriolet body and of the other 77 212 Inters Abbot’s of Farnham fitted 1 cabriolet body and Vignale 4 more.

The early ownership of this car appears to involve either Californian building contractor Tony Parravano and or Italian film maker Roberto Rosselini. In August 1953 Rosselini entered #0235EU in the 1000kms (600 mile) race for sports cars at the Nurburgring, Rosselini was entered to drive but did not show up, his place was taken by Dutch journalist, with competition experience, Maurice Gatsonides who partnered Riccardo Vignolo.

Maurice is quoted as having said of his ride “I was to have the most magnificent car of the whole field, as this Ferrari was bodied by Pininfarina and carried a four seat drophead coupe with graceful lines, a sure winner at any Concours d’ Elegance”.

In this linked photo the street 212 Inter Cabriolet sticks out like a sore thumb twixt the race prepared #7 Lancia D20 and the #56 Jaguar C-type.

Of the three cars in the photo that finished the race the #1 Ferrari 375MM #0286AM, far left, driven by world Champions Alberto Ascari and Giuseppe Farina won, the three Lancia’s #5, #6, and #7 all retired with today’s featured #0235EU coming through to finish ninth, eleven spots ahead of the #56 C type driven by Belgians Kasimir Olislaegers and Charles de Keerle.

In 1954 the car was sold and ended up in the USA, in the 1970’s the motor and 4 speed transmission were removed and replaced with a cheaper to maintain Chevrolet V8 and 3 speed Muncie transmission.

All the correct bits and pieces were traced in the 1990’s and #0235EU reappeared fully restored for the first time last year.

Get Smart – Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series 2 #2943GT

It’s been a couple of years since I looked at a Pininfarina bodied Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series 2 in any detail, since then I have found out one such car was used by Maxwell Smart in the pilot episode of the Get Smart television comedy.

Chassis #2943GT was built in October 1961 the 148th of 204, painted red with a black interior. After spending it’s first couple of years in Italy #2943 was acquired by Prince Joackim Zu Furstenberg who kept it at Schloss Donaueschingen in Southern Germany until 1972.

The current Norwegian owner bought the car from Germany’s preeminent Ferrari dealer Auto Becker in 1972 and exported it to Norway where it remained, until it was offered for sale at the upcoming Bonhams auction at the Goodwood Revival next week.

The car, seen here at last month’s Prescott’s VSCC meeting, is said to have approximately 38,500 miles on the clock, an average of just 745 miles a year over it’s entire life and is estimated to fetch up to £500,000.

The downside is that the 3 litre / 183 cui Colombo Tipo 125 V12 motor has not been started for 4 or 5 years and is said to have a problem with the fuel pump, so some expense will be incurred to recommission the car.

Dentists Body Art – Huispano Suiza K6 Convertible

Marc Birkigt’s K6 design, which replaced the earlier Ballot/Junior model first saw the light of day in 1934.

Offered to fill the market segment below the exclusive J12 model the K6 featured a new 120 hp straight six motor with overhead pushrod operated valves which followed Rolls Royce practice in the pursuit of silence when in motion.

Depending on the body work which varied in weight and aerodynamic efficiency from one coach builder to the next a K6 could reach a speed over 85 mph.

Following the trend set by the Huispano Suiza H6 the K6 was fitted with four wheel cable operated brakes with servo assistance as licensed to Rolls Royce.

Carrosserie Pourtout is one of a number of coachbuilders who built bodies for clients what ever chassis they bought. The company is probably best known for it’s the revolutionary Eclipse retractable hard top roof and a class winning Le Mans entry, the company ceased operating as a design business in the 1990’s but is still involved in body shop repairs.

It seems most likely that the lines for the coachwork of this 1936 Huispano Suiza K6 Convertible were drawn by former dentist turned designer Georges Paulin who started working for Carrosserie Pourtout in 1933 and remained with the company until he was executed by occupying German forces for his allegiance with the French Resistance and British Intelligence in 1942.

The K6 could be built for owners to drive with a shorter wheel base or for a chauffer to drive with a longer wheel base.

No Side Vent Windows – Ferrari 250 GT Pininfarina Series I Cabriolet

In 1957 Ferrari launched the Ferrari 250 GT Pininfarina Series 1 Cabriolet with a list price if $14,950 over $3,000 more than the Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder.

The 250 GT Pininfarina Series 1 Cabriolet was better appointed with more sound proofing and more comfortable than the shorter wheel base 250 GT California Spyder.

This car is on of just six Ferrari 250 GT Pininfarina Series 1 Cabriolets to have the fender vents that were a feature of the California Spyder. To tell a Ferrari 250 GT Pininfarina Series I Cabriolet apart from a Ferrari 250 GT Pininfarina Series II Cabriolet one only has to look to see if either of the long wheel base cars has side vent windows, the 42 Series I cars did not have them while the 200 Series II cars did have them fitted.
