Ferrari Mondial Cabriolet

Ferari replaced the 308 GT4 2 + 2 I looked at last week with the Mondial model, like the one seen here at Bristol Italian Auto Moto Festibal, in 1980. The Cabriolet was not introduced until 1983.

Pininfarina was chosen to design the replacement for the Bertone designed 308GT4, the Mondial featured a steel body built by Carrozzeria Scaglietti to sit over a steel box section space frame.

The second generation Mondial t was introduced in 1989 with smaller tidier side intakes and bumpers in matching body colours.

The engine and gearbox of the Mondial is mounted, for ease of maintenance, on a subframe which makes taking the engine out to change the spark plugs a much easier process, this innovation has transferred to all subsequent V8 Ferrari’s.

Originally the Mondial 8 was powered by a 4 cam 2 valve per cylinder 3 litre 183 cui V8, in 1982 QV Quattrovalvole, four valve per cylinder heads were fitted to the 3 litre / 183 cui motors. In 1985 these motors were increased in bore and stroke to give 3185 cc / 194 cui for the 3.2 Mondial models with 280 hp up from 240 hp on the original Mondial motor. 1989 saw the introduction of 3.4 litre / 207 cui motors which produced 300 hp.

The T designation introduced in 1989, seen on today’s featured 1990 car, denotes a change in the power train layout from transversely mounted engine and gearbox of all models up to 1989 to a longitudinally mounted engine and transverse gearbox that allowed the engine to be mounted lower in the chassis which consequently improved the handling. This engine gearbox layout was also carried over to future Ferrari V8 models.

Rare Side Vents – Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series 2 #1815GT

Despite the Haynes International Motor Museum having a room full of red vehicles only one of the Rosso Corsa cars is a Ferrari.

The Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series 2 was launched in 1959 featuring a Pinin Farina designed body that was simpler than the Series 1, in part was due to the intention of the Series 2 to be made for series production rather than to order.

This 1960 left hand drive model with a 3185 cc / 194 cui V12 was orginally exported to the USA and in 1987 was sold by Coy’s of London with the registration ‘Q 999 EGC’.

It is thought around 212 Series 2 models were manufactured as against just 36 of the Series 1 model.

While the Series 2 is known as a model manufactured in series this particular example has extremely rare, for the model type, side vents.

Special Drophead – Bristol 401 Cabriolet

Continuing the Centenary Celebration of the Bristol Aeroplane Company out of which Bristol Cars was born, today we are looking at another unique car a Bristol 401 Drophead.

Between 1948 and 1953 Bristol Cars built 611 401 coupes and 23 mechanically identical 402’s cabriolets.

Sources close to the Bristol Owners Club assure me that this vehicle, seen at a VSCC meeting at Prescott, is a one off special 401 coupe converted into a cabriolet.

How many are there – Bristol 400 Cabriolet ?

I have made a bit of a mess of my original idea of celebrating the Bristol Aeroplane Companies Centenary celebration by setting out to post a blog about each model in the order they were released with the most basic mistake of confusing a 401 with a 403, now that has been rectified I find there was a version of the Bristol 400 which I did not even know about until John Lomas kindly pointed out I had a photograph of it !

This Bristol 400 cabriolet appears to be one of two built that never entered full production. If I had known just how rare it was when I took the photograph I would have waited for an opportunity to take a photograph of the front of the car, but that as they say will now have to wait for another day.

It would appear that Pinin Farina also built a Bristol 400 convertible but director Tony Crook cancelled any plans for it to go into production allegedly because of the inferior quality of the bodywork. According to the Bristol Owners Club, despite this decision there may be as many as 10 Pinin Farina Bristol 400’s. A quick search on Google images reveals one of the Pinin Farina 400 Cabrilolets to be a dark blue while another is eggshell blue.

Slightly off topic it was lovely to see Kevin Harvick keeping his composure after his pit crew dropped lug nut yesterday at Phoenix. Somehow Kevin managed to come back from 19th to 6th behind Jimmy Johnson and now sits 46 points behind Hamlin who after leading most of the race ran low on fuel at the end and wound up coming in just 12th.

Kevin is certainly the underdog going into Homestead Miami next weekend, but he certainly won’t be the first underdog going into the final race of the season to lift the Cup. Go Harvick ! Go #29 ! Go Happy !

Move Over – Rover P6… Cabriolet !

The other day I was ambling along to the shops in the bright sunshine and I caught a glimpse of an old school chrome bumper through a hedge, it was attached to a Rover P6 (marketed as a Rover 2000) I didn’t think much of it till I got around the corner and it registered there was something odd, the roof was missing.

I went back to check and sure enough this is a Rover 2000 4 door cabriolet. I have no idea where or when the conversion was done, probably when the car was at least 12 months old to avoid attracting additional car purchase tax.

The Rover P6 Series 1 was in production from 1963 – 1973. This particular model was relatively underpowered by a 104 hp single carb, 1978 cc 120 CUI Heronhead (flat head / combustion chamber in the piston) overhead cam four cylinder engine. 208, 875 examples were produced of which between 160 to 170 are thought to have been converted post registration (to avoid additional car purchase tax) into estate / station wagon types by HR Owen and Crayford Engineering. Crayford are well known for Cabriolet conversions and possibly may have done this one.

Slightly off topic tonight (UK time) is the night Happy Harvick and anyone else interested in lifting the NEXTEL CUP surely has to beat Jimmy Johnson to be considered a contender, if the #48 leaves California with the win then I’d say the Chase and the Drive for Five is all over bar the shouting.
