Series II Side Vents – Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 Series I #5887

The Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 Series I was introduced in 1963 with quad headlights and a 4 speed plus overdrive gearbox. 500 examples were manufactured before an interim model was introduced.

Chassis #5887 seen here at Silverstone last year was built in 1964 and is recorded as being delivered to “Longoni” in Italy.

Subsequently #5887 is known to have visited Copley Motor Cars in Boston Massachusetts at an unspecified date, in 1996 the motor appears to have been overhauled in Hubbard, Ohio and in 2001 the car was seen in Appleton, Michigan.

In 2002 #5887 is said to have been imported into the UK by an Aston Martin specialist who kept and maintained it in good condition until 2011.

Since then #5887 has been stripped and repainted in the correct Ferrari Blue Pozzi.

The Auction notes that accompanied the car when it was photographed last year noted that the side vents in the wings/fenders first appeared on Series II 330 GT’s in 1965.

This vehicle sold for GB£89,380 at Silverstone Auctions in May last year.

Ferrari Friday – Danville Concours d’Elegance

To round out the week we will take another trip to Danville Concours d’Elegance where Geoffrey Horton took today’s photographs a couple of weeks ago.

Only 12 Ferrari 500 Superfast Series II’s were built and this 1965 example has been with the same owner for 45 years.

For a while during the 1970’s and 1980’s it looked like front engined Ferrari’s, like the 1972 365 GTB/4 above, might disappear altogether they carried on building front engined 400 and later 412 models up to 1989, then there was a 3 year gap before the front engined 456 appeared in 1992.

The Ferrari 512TR replaced the Ferrari Testarossa in 1992, powered by the same flat 12 motor, but producing 30 more horsepower which increased the top speed from 180 mph to 195mph.

Above the interior of a Ferrari Enzo, the gears are shifted using an electrohydraulic shift transmission operated by paddles on the steering wheel with LED lights advising drivers when to shift a transfer of technology from Ferrari’s racing programme.

The Ferrari California model above has now been replaced by the Ferrari California T, but it still looks timeless with the roof up or down.

Roelofs Replica – Ferrari 250 GTO Replica

Today’s featured Ferrari is a Replica ’64 250 GTO notchback seen at Sherbourne Castle a couple of years ago.

The ever growing demand for real classic Ferrari’s drove up prices massively in the late 1980’s and saw some seek a cheaper alternative by commissioning replica’s usually based on a Ferrari 250 GT/E chassis.

By shortening a 250 GT/E chassis a passing likeness to the more desirable 250 GT SWB, GTO, and TR models could be achieved at a cost of $300,000 plus a 250 GT/E donor car.

While the exterior likeness might pass muster shortening a 250 GT/E chassis meant that often the gear shift was not in the correct place and or the seats beeing too far forward as a result of the 250 GT/E suspension being bulkier than that on the model being copied, also the steering geometry for a long wheel base GT/E was not the same as for shorter models.

It appears that today’s featured Replica was built by Piet Roelofs, on the eastern outskirts of Arnhem in The Netherlands, who is reckoned to be one of the better Replica manufacturers by Micheal Sheehan an exotic car broker who tracks over 200 replica Ferrari’s.

La Ferrari, first seen in 2013 is Ferrari’s first hybrid production car of which the manufacturers say just 499 examples will be built.

This hybrid is based on the Enzo and track FXX models.

The carbon fibre moncoque was developed by Rory Bryne who was responsible for the design of Micheal Schumacher’s Formula One Championship winning cars at Benetton and Ferrari.

La Ferrari features an in house designed body, the first Ferrari road car body since the Bertone styled body for the Dino 308 GT4 not to feature any input from Pinninfarina.

La Ferrari is fitted with a 789hp V12 and a HY KERS, Hybrid Kinetic Energy Recovery System, battery powered electric motor that will deliver an additional 160hp for short periods, making La Ferrari the most powerful street legal Ferrari ever built.

Ferrari quoted performance figures include a rest to 62 mph time in under 3 seconds and top speed of 217 mph.

The price of La Ferrari is said to be more than GBP £1 million / USD $1.69 million.

Seven Figure Anonymous Commission – Ferrari F12 TRS

I can’t imagine the wealth required to even think about approaching Ferrari and Pinninfarina to comission a one off car but it must be well into the billions before one can afford a vehicle that is going to cost something north of seven figures like today’s anonymously commissioned Ferrari F12 TRS.

The base vehicle of this commision is a £239,000 Ferrari F12berlinetta.

The targa top body created by Flavio Manzoni is otherwise all new with a nod to the 1961 Le Mans winning Ferrari 250 TRI/61 in the treatment of the windscreen and side window’s.

Like wise the see through bubble over the 730hp motor complete with red cam covers is a nod to Ferrari’s successful sports racing cars of the late 1950’s and early 1960’s.

It remains to be seen if the owner will reveal him or herself, but in the meantime one can’t help but wonder how many similar projects never come to public attention.

Tee, Targa or TT – Ferrari California T

The T in the new 2+2 Ferrari California T, launched earlier this year, stands for neither the golf tee, nor Targa top but for turbocharged which further investigation leads to the fact that the California T is in fact powered by a twin turbocharged motor, a technology last used by Ferrari on the F40.

The new 552hp Califonia T biturbo motor has a smaller 3.9 litre / 235 cui motor that produces 70 hp more than the original normally aspirated California V8, is 15% more fuel efficient, but still in the Rolls Royce league, and produces 15% less emissions.

The convertible hard top has new subtlety more aggressive panels from Pinninfarina all round and some interior features derived from the F12berlinetta.

The California T is the first Ferrari to be fitted with the iOS 7.1 operating system compatible Apple CarPlay meaning ones Apple devices can be operated by Ferrari’s native control systems.

The 552hp twin turbo motor will push the California t from rest to 62.5mph in 3.6 seconds and on to a quoted top speed of 196 mph.

50th Anniversary – Ferrari F50

Just as the Ferrari F40 was a showcase for the companies technology on it’s fortieth anniversary so the Ferrari F50 showcased the companies technology on it’s fiftieth anniversary.

Unlike the F40 which was loosely based on the 288 GTO evolution of the and 308 GTB the F50 was not in anyway based on any existing road vehicle.

Instead the F50 appears to have used as it’s starting point a 60 valve, 5 valve per cylinder, 4.7 litre / 286 cui version of the 4.0 / 244 cui V12 motor that powered Ferrari 333SP endurance sports racing car, a motor that was itself an evolution of the 1991 3.5 litre / 213 cui V12 used in the companies Formula One programme.

The 513hp normally aspirated motor was fitted to an all new carbon fibre chassis, unusually the steering was unassisted, though by this time power assisted steering had been introduced and later banned from Formula One racing cars.

Of the 349 F50’s built between 1995 and 1997 304 were Rossa Corsa, 31 Giallo Modena, 8 Rosso Barchetta, 4 Argento Nurburgring and 4 Nero Daytona.

Test showed the F50 capable of reaching 60 mph from rest in 3.7 seconds and cover a 1/4 mile in 12.1 seconds reaching 123 mph. Top speed was quoted as 202 mph.
