Complete Set Of Tools – Ferrari 250GT/L #5353GT

Last in the current series of Ferrari 250 GT/L Lusso series of blogs in the example seen by Geoffrey Horton at Danville Concours d’Elegance last year.

The red interior helped me identify this vehicle as probably being chassis number #5353GT built in 1964.

Little is known about the car prior to 2010 when it was offered for sale with 61,000 Kms on the clock for $575,000.

The current owner has shown this car at several Concours d’Elegance events and won the KCBS Award at Palo Alto Concour’s d’Elegance last year.

Unlike the 250 GT Lusso #5143GT I looked at a couple of weeks ago #5353GT was last sold with a complete set of tools.

Which Verde Pino ? – Ferrari 250 GT/L #5097GT

I’ll let farmer Hugh James the owner of today’s featured 1963 Ferrari 250 GT/L chassis #5097GT tell you about his car at the end of today’s blog personally.

While looking for details about the car I stumbled across an old thread at Ferrari Chat that listed over 1000 colours, many with codes that have been offered and or used on the cars from Maranello.

The list includes several variations of the same code but it was interesting to find that there have been as many as 8 variations of the Verde Pino seen on Mr James car at Auto Italia Brooklands a couple of years ago. If you happen to know which Verde Pino #5097GT is painted please do not hesitate to chime in below.

Almost A Complete Set Of Tools – Ferrari 250 GT Lusso #5143

A couple of years ago I looked at Tim Lewis’s ’64 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso taking part on Tour Britannia, today’s featured ’63 example, seen at the Classic Motor Show, NEC Birmingham, chassis #5143 has been prepared to Concours d’Elegance standard.

#5143 was originally sold through official dealer Autofficina Vari in Rome to a customer at the end of 1963, by the 1970’s #5143 had found it’s way to the UK where well known collector Anthony Bamford was one of it’s owners.

There after the car went back to Europe through Belgium to Germany where a refurbishment was undertaken by official Ferrari dealer Peter Rosenmaier in Germany.

After a period in storage #5193 received a body off 4 year restoration which included sending the body to the best body restoration specialist, the motor to the best motor rebuilders and so forth resulting in a car finished to the highest Concours d’Elegance standards.

Once the restoration was complete the German owner sold the car at R&M Auctions at MAranello in May 2008 for just over 1 million US$ including buyers premium.

Amongst the items the new owner acquired with the car were a spare set of original Marchal headlights, the original handbook, two Lusso brochures, a framed Pininfarina Lusso advert, a first edition copy of Kurt H. Miska’s book The Berlinetta Lusso and an almost complete set of original tools.

Giordanengo Replica TR – Ferrari 250 GT #0611GT

Sitting on the Coy’s stand at the Autosport International show a couple of months ago was this eye catching Ferrari, the car appears to be part of the Coys showroom stock and acted as eye candy for the Coy’s stand despite not being entered into the auction.

This particular 1956 Ferrari chassis #0611GT started out as the 53rd Boano low roof coupé bodied 250GT of a total of 88 built, a left hand drive model originally sold new to Mario Machiarelli of Genova, Italy.

By 1988 a Mr Robert Fehlmann, whom I believe once raced a rare, if not unique,Ghia Supersonic bodied Conrero and ran a garage business in Altenhaus Switzerland, owned #0611GT.

Fehlmann had the Boano body on #0611GT replaced by highly respected restoration specialist Giovanni Giordanengo of Cuneo Italy with a likeness of a Le Mans winning 250 Testa Rossa Scaglietti pontoon body with right hand drive.

It is believed of the 33 original 250TR’s, which can fetch upwards of $10 million, as many as 46 exist today some unsurprisingly with disputed identities.

Sources I have seen suggest a car like #0611GT featured today would have cost around #150,000 to build excluding the cost of the donor car.

In 1990 #0611GT was bought by Peter Heuberger of Oberramsern in Switzerland.

Peter is known to have driven the car at classic events at the Nurburgring and Montreux up until at least 2002.

It is unlikely that this car will handle or perform anything like as well as a well maintained original 250TR which it imitates, but at less than 1/50th of the cost of an original it will probably turn just as many heads.

730hp Grand Tourer – Ferrari F12berlinetta

In 2012 Ferrari announced it’s new Pininfarina styled 730hp F12berlinetta would replace the 612hp Ferrari 599 which had been in production since 2006.

The 730hp V12 motor is a tuned version of that seen in the 650hp Ferrari FF first seen in 2011 as is the 7 speed dual-clutch automated semi-automatic transmission which can also be found in the California, 458 Italia and LaFerrari models.

The F12berlinetta’s alloy chassis developed with Scaglietti is said to be stiffer and and lighter than that of the 599 which it replaces, the center of gravity has also been lowered and the finished car has a 46% front, 54% rear weight distribution.

Among the interesting novelties fitted to the F12berlinetta are active brake cooling ducts which open only when the brakes are hot, this feature reduces the cars overall aerodynamic drag during the course of a journey. The cars drag coefficient is said to be 0.299.

When lapping the Ferrari Fiorano test circuit the F12berlinetta is said to be 3.5 seconds faster than the 599 GTB, and two seconds faster than the Enzo, 458 Italia and 430 Scuderia.

Classic Europeans – Desert Classic Concours d’Elegance

Last week I looked at some of the classic American vehicles at the Desert Classic Concours d’Elegance, today it is the turn of some of the Classic Europeans thanks to Geoffrey Horton who kindly shared his photographs.

Geoffrey’s Jaguar XK140 FHC SE/MC is seen above parked alongside the unique De Tomaso Sport 5000 which was raced once and retired from the 1966 Grand Prix di Mugello and the Replica Ferrari Testa Rossa I looked at on Friday.

Delage D8 Letourneur et Marchand, Desert Classics, Concours d'Elegance

In 1935 Louis Delage had to liquidate the Delage company he founded in 1905 and sold the marque to Delahaye. The first Delage of the Delahaye era 4.7 liter / 286 cui straight eight powered D8-120 twelve chassis of which were sent to LeTourneur et Marchand where stunning 18′ Aerosport Coupe Coachwork was fitted, the 1937 example above is one of eight known to remain.

For some reason my blog on the SIATA 208S proved one of the most popular I have ever written to date, the 1951 SIATA Daina Gran Sport above was a FIAT based Special predecessor of the 208 powered by a modified FIAT motor with a unique to model overhead camshaft and twin carburetors which increased the power from 60hp to 72hp.

Lancia manufactured the Aurelia from 1950 through to 1958, from 1956 Lancia built just 521 B24 Convertibles like the 1957 example seen above.

In 1963 Mercedes Benz was winding down production of it 300 SL Coupé derived 300SL Roadster building just 26 of the latter, above is one of just seven 1963 300 SL Roadsters thought to have been built for the European market.

Tony Adamowicz dominated the up to 2 litre / 122 cui class of the 1968 Trans Am series winning eight out of ten races to seal the championship, above is a Porsche 911 Adamowicz Trans Am Tribute car built by the same team who built the original.

In 1990 I was driving through a small town in Surrey when I spotted A 1983 Citroen 2CV6 Beachcomber for sale in a drive. Having bought and sold several of these cars I had no hesitation in pulling over to check it out. It was not in the same condition as the one seen above but I bought it there and then anyway and over the next couple of years drove it 36,OOO miles extremely happy miles across Europe.

On the 1st of December 1914 the Maserati brothers, Alfieri, Bindo, Carlo, Ettore, and Ernesto established the company, featured on this blog every Monday, bearing their name. FIAT became the current owners of the company in 1993 and in 2004 after an official 4 decade absence from racing Maserati returned to the tracks with the MC12 Corsa. The MC12 Stradale is the road going version heavily based on the running gear of the faster Ferrari Enzo. Like the Enzo all 50 MC12s were pre sold.

Morgan Aero 8, Desert Classics, Concours d'Elegance

Finally a sad tale soon after this photo of a Morgan Aero was taken it was involved in a collision with a truck. Fortunately no one was hurt but the Morgan was left much the worse for wear.

Son In Law’s Tip – Ferrari Testa Rossa Replica

One day Ferrari enthusiast Peter Giacobbi got a tip from his son in law that there was a huge warehouse in Colico di Piano near Como, Italy, that was full of car parts.

When Peter followed the lead up he found the body for today’s featured car in the rafters. Peter shipped the body to Orange County California where he enlisted Dan McLeod of Anaheim to help him build a replica of his favourite car the 1959 Ferrari Testa Rossa.

Peter’s Replica uses Ferrari 330 front suspension, a 4.4 litre / 268 cui V12 from a Ferrari 365 and a rear end from a Ferrari 400i

Since finishing his Testa Rossa Peter has shown it at numerous Concours events where it’s unfinished patina has been well received by the public.
