Katie – Morris 8 Series E

In 1935 Morris was keen to regain it’s position as Britains largest motor manufacturer when it launched the Morris 8 in response to the successful Ford Model Y which was first seen in 1932.

Four series of Morris 8’s were manufactured Series I from 1935 to ’37, Series II in 1938 and Series E from 1938 to 1948. Unusually the Morris 8 Series E remained in production for military and essential civilian use through out the war with civilian consumer production resumed in 1945.

The Series E Morris 8 is easily distinguished from it’s forbears by the semi integrated head lights and it’s absence of running boards.

The waterfall styled grill was much in vogue at the time with Hudson in the US and Triumph in the UK being among the more fanciful users of the waterfall styled grills.

The 29 horse power 6 volt 4 cylinder motor could propel the Morris 8 Series E to a top speed of 58 mph. The motor would remain in use in Morris Minor cars from 1948 to 1953 and would also find itself being installed in Centurion, Conqueror and Chieftain main battle tanks as an auxiliary motor.

Katie as the Morris 8 Series E,seen here at the Atwell Wilson Museum in Calne, is known was purchased new for £120 pounds by Mr And Mrs EA & WG Harris of Laurel Farm Chadstoke Somerset from Stringers Garage in Chard Somerset on the 1st of November 1948 having been built a week earlier on the 25th of October.

The car covered 10,500 miles when it was returned to Strigers in 1952. The car remained in the Stringers show room and was used to train apprentices until 1979 when a Stringers employee purchased the car and put it back on the road. Since then it was repainted from its original black to its present two tone scheme. The car now has over 30,000 miles on the clock and has been on show at the Atwell Wilson Museum since 2000.

Series E Tourer – Hupmobile Eight Tourer

By 1925 Hupmobile was ready to ditch it’s Model R which had been in production since 1917 and move up market with the Series E.

The Series E was powered by an all new eight cylinder motor with L shaped cylinder heads.

An innovative feature of the Hupmobile Eight was the double tilt beam head lights which were a for runner of modern headlights with dipped beams.

With 60 hp produced by the four litre / 244 cui motor it was deemed prudent to fit the Series E with hydraulic operated brakes in place of the hitherto ubiquitous cable operated and or rod brakes which needed constant adjustment.

While the instrumentation has changed much in detail since 1925 the basic information remains pretty much the same, note the Hupmobile Eight is fitted with a handy light above the ignition switch.

The chassis number indicates today’s featured car was built in 1926 with the E1 model designation.

Hupmobile was known for its poetic use of language and fine arts in its advertising, I am guessing the adornments on the running boards and rear wing fender are factory options.

Punctures were a very much more frequent occurrence than to day the tyres all had inner tubes, if you were lucky you could save the expense of buying a new tyre after a puncture by repairing the inner tube.

The Hupmobile Eight were offered as a Sedans, Tourers as seen here, Coupés with or without Dickie seats and Roadsters.

Production of the Series E Hupmobiles ceased in 1928 when the Model M replaced it.

In the absence of any room within the cockpit to carry anything a traveling trunk was often the smart way to carry ones chattels.

Annual Face Lift – Vauxhall Velox Series E Pick Up

The Velox Series E was launched in 1951 with 4 door saloon/sedan, 2 door tourer and Coupé pick up versions.

In 1955 Vauxhall owners General Motors mandated annual face lifts for it’s Vauxhall models and the car seen here is a 1955 model with a less clumsy front grill than it’s predecessors.

Power came from a six cylinder motor that produced 64 hp or 68 hp if specified in high compression spec. Note the faux sculpted chrome bonnet trim, a throw back to Vauxhalls built in 1911.

Velox’s were assembled in Vauxhall’s home town of Luton, Australia and New Zealand. Utility pick ups were and are particularly popular in the farming communities of Australia where they were sold with Vauxhall badges by Holden.

The Series E Velox was phased out in 1957 to make way Velox and Cresta PA models introduced for 1958.
