Luxury Elegant Loss Leader – Continental Mark II

Continental was designed to be a stand alone luxury and elegance brand from Lincoln to compete with GM’s Cadillac and Chrysler’s Imperial Brands that would build on the success of the 1940’s Lincoln Continental.

Continental Mark II, Desert Classic C d'E, Palm Springs

Having considered and rejected the idea of employing an outside team to design such an important vehicle Ford designated a team from it’s own special products division comprising chief stylist John Reinhart, chief body engineer Gordon Buehrig assisted by Robert McGuffery Thomas and chief engineer Harley Copp to design the Continental Mark II in late 1952.

Continental Mark II, Desert Classic C d'E, Palm Springs

Ford had hoped to build the car using unibody / monocoque construction but Copp is credited with rejecting the idea on grounds of tooling costs for what was always intended to be a low volume hand built vehicle, and so the car was built with separate chassis and body.

Continental Mark II, Desert Classic C d'E, Palm Springs

For a car that was launched in 1956 there is a remarkable absence of chrome work giving it, size not withstanding, a refined European look. Power came from a factory blueprinted (hand made from closest to specification hand picked parts), 6 litre / 368 cui Lincoln V8 that was tuned to give 300 hp.

Continental Mark II, Desert Classic C d'E, Palm Springs

The likes of Continental owners Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and the Shah of Iran had only one option choice to make, wether or not to have the US$595 factory fitted air conditioning or not. Elizabeth Taylor was given a Continental Mark II by Warner Brothers that was specially painted to match the colour of her eyes.

Continental Mark II, Desert Classic C d'E, Palm Springs

Priced at US$ 10,000 in 1956 the Continental cost the same as a contemporary Rolls Royce or two Cadillacs, until the arrival of the US$ 13,074 Cadillac Eldordo Brougham in 1957. Surprisingly Ford reckoned they were loosing US$ 1,000 on each Continental Mark II built.

Continental Mark II, Desert Classic C d'E, Palm Springs

Between late 1955 and 1957 around 3000 Continental Mark IIs were built at the end of the production run the Continental brand was reabsorbed into the Lincoln brand and the name hence forth continued as a Lincoln model name.

My thanks to Geoffrey Horton for the photographs of today’s featured 1956 model seen earlier this years at the Desert Classic Concours d’Elegance at Palm Springs.

Thanks for joining me on this “Luxury Elegant Loss Leader” edition of “Gettin’ a li’l psycho on tyres” I hope you will join me again tomorrow. Don’t forget to come back now !

Palm Springs – Desert Classic Concours d’Elegance

This year the Desert Classic Concours d’Elegance moved to the Desert Princess Country Club and Doral Desert Princess Resort in Palm Springs California on February 24th and Geoffrey Horton has kindly sent sent today’s selection of photographs to us an overview of some of the vehicles present.

Jaguar XK 140 FHC SE, Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance, Palm Springs, CA

Geoffrey own 1955 Jaguar XK140 FHC SE/MC was looking more resplendent than ever in the spring California sun.

Mercedes Benz 28/95, Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance, Palm Springs, CA

When I saw this photo of a 1923 Mercedes Benz 28/95 I wondered if it was perhaps a creation from Gary L Wells workshop but in fact this beast with a 7.2 litre / 439 cui six cylinder aeroplane motor converted for road use is all the work of Mercedes Benz. The short wheel base version of the roadster, like the one seen here, was originally given the Targa Florio name after Mercedes Benz victories on the torturous Sicilian track in 1921 and 1922.

Ruxton Model C, Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance, Palm Springs, CA

Looking similar to a Cord L29 is this 1929 Ruxton Model C which like the Cord L29 has front wheel drive and a straight 8 engine but unlike the Cord L29 of which 4400 examples were built only 500 Ruxton Model C’s are thought to have been built the two tone lilac paintwork is standard for the period.

Marmon V16 Series 144, Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance, Palm, Springs, CA

Last year Geoffrey shared photo’s of a Marmon V16 Limousine, above is the last Marmon V16 sold in 1933, a Coupe version of which just 5 others are thought to remain.

Chrysler Imperial, Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance, Palm, Springs, CA

Although powered “only” by a 6.3 litre / 384 cui straight 8 Geoffrey’s car of the show was without question this 1931 Chrysler Imperial which appears to have a sheen just a little brighter than all of the other vehicles seen on the day.

Tucker 48, Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance, Palm, Springs, CA

This 1948 Tucker 48 chassis #1003 featuring a motor in the boot / trunk and rear wheel drive is one of 51 built and is expected to fetch between US$1.5 and 1.9 million at auction on March 9th.

Cunningham C3, Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance, Palm, Springs, CA

Moving forward five years this 1953 Cunningham C3 is one of 20 Roadsters built in West Palm Beach, it is fitted with 331 cui Hemi V8 and was shipped to Turin for coachwork to be fitted by Vignale. In addition to the roadsters Cunningham built 5 C3 convertibles.

Mercedes Benz 300 SL, Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance, Palm, Springs, CA

This US Spec 1957 Mercedes Benz 300SL Roadster would have originally been distributed by Studebaker Packard Corporation.

Maserati, 3500 GT, Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance, Palm, Springs, CA

According to the owner of this 1959 Maserati 3500 GT was sold new in Mexico and it “may” have once belonged to left wing Mexican President Adolfo Lopez Mateos.

Shelby Cobra GT500, Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance, Palm, Springs, CA

The 1968 Shelby Cobra GT 500 above is fitted with a 428cui interceptor motor and had clocked well over 100,000 miles prior to a two year restoration in 2005, since when it has won a Best in Show award at the 2007 Cobra Owners Concours and been drag raced at California Speedway.

Ford Roadster, Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance, Palm, Springs, CA

Geoffrey tells me the ’32 Ford Roadster above belongs to well known IMSA racer Rick Knoop and packs 400 hp.

Ferrari 512M, Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance, Palm, Springs, CA

Finally a Friday car this much modified Ferrari 512 S was upgraded to M spec in 1971 and upgraded further by the Filipinetti team with a Porsche 917 windscreen to what has become known as M/F spec. Drivers of the car in period include Ronnie Peterson, Henri Pescarolo, Mike Parkes and Joakim Bonnier.

My thanks to Geoffrey Horton for sharing his photographs and a smidgen of welcome California sunshine.

Thanks for joining me on this “Palm Springs” edition of “Gettin’ a li’l psycho on tyres” I hope you will join me again tomorrow. Don’t forget to come back now !

Parkinson’s Research And Care – 8th Danville Concours d’Elegance

The weekend before last saw the 8th Danville Concour’s d’Elegance take place, organised to raise funds for research into Parkinson’s desease. Thanks to photographs by Geoffrey Horton here are a few of the cars that took part.

Aston Martin DB2, Danville Concours d'Elegance

The USA’s first World Champion driver Phil Hill is said to have been the first owner of this Aston Martin DB2, in 1951 a decade before he won the World Championship driving for Ferrari.

Aston Martin DB 2/4, Danville Concours d'Elegance

One of the worlds rarer Aston Martins is the DB2/4 with Italian coachwork by Serafino Allemano. This 1953 chassis #LML/761 was ordered by a customer in Casablanca who used it in local races.

Aston Martin DB5, Danville Concours d'Elegance

Another mouth watering example of the Aston Martin marque was this DB5 1023 of these classic ‘James Bond’ models were manufactured between 1963 and 1965, most of them with out the swiveling number plates, bullet proof rear screen, ejector seat, machine guns smoke screen and oil slick that the handsome man with the Edinburgh brogue found useful until he crashed avoiding a mirror in Gold Finger.

Maserati GranTurismo MC, Danville Concours d'Elegance

Both yesterday and the day before saw the first ever Trofeo Maserati races taking place at Sanoma using racing versions of the Gran Turismo MC as seen above. Venezuelan debutant Alex Popow won Saturdays race with Grey’s Anatomy guest star Patrick Dempsey claiming 6th. Sunday’s results were unknown at the time of writing.

Fisker Karma, Danville Concours d'Elegance

Fisker Automotive was founded in 2007 in Anaheim California, but has the hybrid Fisker Karma vehicles it markets manufactured by Valmet Automotive in Uusikaupunki, Finland. Among the novel features are a solar panel roof which contributes to the climate control system.

McLaren MP4-12C, Danville Concours d'Elegance

The McLaren MP4-12 C is the racing car manufacturers third road car after the 1969 M6GT (3 possibly 4 built) and 1992/98 F1 (106 built), like all McLaren’s road car projects the MP4-12 C draws heavily on it’s racing technologies which in this case includes a second brake pedal which acts on the inside rear wheel to minimise understeer.

Mercedes Benz 300 SL, Danville Concours d'Elegance

From 1957 to 1963 Mercedes Benz manufactured 1,858 300 SL Roadsters, this one comes complete with the optional factory luggage cases and is one of less than 20 1957 vehicles fitted with Rudge wheels.

ALFA Romeo 2600 Spyder, Danville Concours d'Elegance

Since the 1920’s ALFA Romeo had offered straight six powered vehicles to it’s customers the 2600 or 106 series manufactured from 1961 to 1968 was the last of this line. Above is 1964 2600, one of 2,255 Spyders built, powered by a 145 hp twim overhead cam version of the straight 6.

Iso Griffo, Danville Concours d'Elegance

So far as I have been able to discern the Iso Grifo A3/L above ‘might be’ the 1963 prototype shown by Bertone at the 1963 Turin Auto Show. Clues are the given 1963 date of the car and it’s current location. Sales of the 395 hp Chevy V8 cars did not begin until 1965.

Chevrolet Streamliner, Danville Concours d'Elegance

Getting seriously psycho on tyres is Dennis Varni who on the 14th of September recorded a two way speed of 334.360 mph in this Chevrolet Streamliner powered by a turbocharged straight 6 motor at Bonneville.

Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato, Danville Concours d'Elegance

Geoffrey was fortunate to get to the Danville Gala Dinner where this 1961 Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato was on display, it is the only one of the 19 original cars that still exist that has non faired-in headlights. The UK plate ’29 ALY’ has been reasigned to a 2002 Ford Ka.

Pegaso Typo Z Saoutchik Coupé, Danville Concours d'Elegance

Finally this 1955 Pegaso Tipo Z with a Saoutchik Coupé body is one of only two identical cars for international car exhibitions, at a cost of between US$15 to 35,000 they were amongst the most wildly expensive vehicles of their time.

My thanks to Geoffrey Horton for sharing his photograph’s, there will be further blogs from Danville in the week ahead.

Thanks for joining me on this “Parkinson’s Research and Care” edition of “Gettin’ a li’l psycho on tyres” I hope you will join me again tomorrow when I shall be looking at an MG. Don’t forget to come back now !

Continental Elegance – Delahaye 135 Competition #46864

Photographs of today’s featured car, a Delahaye 135 Competition, come courtesy of Geoffrey Horton from February’s Dessert Classic Concours d’Elegance.

Delahaye 135 Competition, Dessert Classic C d'E

The 135 Competition chassis was designed as a road car, this one has a Figoni & Falaschi body originally built in 1936. at least half a dozen French Coachworks offered bodies for the 135 chassis so no two are exactly alike.

Delahaye 135 Competition, Dessert Classic C d'E

Underneath the striking bodywork the 135 featured independent front suspension and 120 hp 3.6 litre / 217 cui six cylinder motor.

Delahaye 135 Competition, Dessert Classic C d'E

Variations of the 135 chassis recorded victories 1935 Coupe des Alpes, 1937 Monte Carlo Rally and 1938 Le Mans 24 Hours events.

Delahaye 135 Competition, Dessert Classic C d'E

Between 1935 and 1938 it is believed 453 Delahaye Competition chassis were built.

My thanks to Geoffry Horton for sending me his photo’s of this magnificent vehicle.

Thanks for joining me on this ‘Continental Elegance’ edition of ‘Gettin’ a li’l psycho on tyres’ I hope you will join me again tomorrow. Don’t forget to come back now !

2011 GALPOT Review #2 – Concours d’Elegance

One of the great joys of 2011 has been a year long correspondence with Geoffrey Horton who has introduced me to the delights of Concours d’Elegance events with some fabulous pictures from the West Coast of the United States. This post is dedicated unashamedly to Geoffrey with thanks for opening my eye’s.

Jaguar XK 140 FHC SE/MC, SF Presidio C d'E

Geoffrey is the owner of this Jaguar XK 140 FHC SE/MC, seen at San Francisco Presidio Concours d”Elegance, which he purchased as a viable rats nest for $3,000 and spent four years restoring to it’s present Concours d’Elegance award winning condition. The only problem he has experienced with his Jaguar is that no one seems to be aware exactly which way round the side light indicators are supposed to have been fitted at the Jaguar factory. If you know please chime in below, this topic will almost certainly be the subject of a future blog.

Allard J2, Palo Alto C d'E

Among the cars I have blogged about is this Allard J2 chassis # 1513, seen at the Dessert Classics C d’E in February. It turns out this car has once the property of Roy Richter the brains behind the post war success that was Bell Auto Parts. Roy was also the California Allard dealer who prepared this car and raced it just once beating the likes of Phil Hill in a Jaguar XK120. Seasons greetings are also due to Colin Warnes of the Allard Register who together ex Allard engineer David Hooper helped with a number of Allard queries through the year.

Mercedes Chevy 300SL, Sacramento State Capital Concours

At the Sacramento State Capital Concours Geoffrey met Dave multi championship winning driver and owner Dave Wolin owner of this 50 foot special Mercedes Chevy 300SL. Geoffrey put me in touch with Dave who kindly furnished me with further details for what has become the single most popular GALPOT blog to date.

Porsche 935 K3, Palo Alto C d'E

One of my all time favorite cars is the Porsche 935, and this immaculate Interscope liveried K3, as originally driven by Ted Field and Danny Ongias, seen at Palo Alto C d’E would be one of my favorite 2 of the type.

Spyker Silvestris V8 Prototype, Goodwood FoS C d'E

Goodwood Festival of Speed hosts an annual Cartier Concours d’Elegance on the lawn in front of Goodwood House, the unrestored Spyker Silvestris V8 Prototype above won this years event, proving that original patina is not necessarily a barrier to success in Concours d’Elegance events.

Allard J2R, Carmel by the Sea C d'E

In August each year Carmel by the Sea holds it’s annual Concours d’Elegance which this year filled 16 blocks. Geoffrey sent me a mouth watering selection of photo’s from the event including this one of a 1955 Allard J2R. The winning car from the event will be reprized on Friday.

Bristol Viotti 407, Greenwich BOC C d'E

At the end of August I managed to visit the Bristol Owners Club Concours d’Elegance held in the grounds of the former Naval School at Greenwich in London. 91 year old ex Bristol works director Syd Lovesy is seen here presenting one of the many trophies to Richard Vaughan owner of the unique Bristol 407 Viotti Convertible that once belonged to comic actor Peter Sellers.

Airmobile Sedan C, Hillsborough C d'E

Much to my embarrassment such was the hectic pace of life at GALPOT towers this summer that until I started to compile this review I had not noticed that I completely missed posting a blog about the Hillsborough Concours d’Elegance where one of the stranger vehicles in attendance was the unique, despite a 45,000 mile promotion drive, Airomobile Sedan C built by Carl T Doman at the request of Paul M. Lewis in 1937.

15 01 12 Amendment i originally indicated Tom Tjaarda was involved in the design however it has been pointed out to me by Tim Murray that Tom was not born until 1934 and so cannot have been involved in the design of the Airomobile.

Maverick Sportster, Palos Verdes C d'E

It’s not everyday that I receive an e-mail with photographs of five different open top sports cars about which I know absolutely zero, but i received such an e-mail from Geoffrey upon his return from Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance in September. Above is what appears to be the prototype 1952 Maverick Sportster recognizable by the absence of any doors !

Dual Ghia, Niello Serrano C d'E

Rounding out the year Geoffrey attended the Niello Serrano Concours d’Elegance where another stunning selection of vehicles was in attendance including a top selection of US convertibles. The one that gave me the biggest headache trying to identify was this Dual Ghia, although a distinct Chrysler flavor eventually gave the game away.

I hope you will join me in thanking Geoffrey for taking the time to send me so many photographs from his collection, I’d also like to thank all those who helped me in anyway, great or small, to tell the stories behind some of them. I can’t wait to see what Geoffrey turns up next year !

Thanks for joining me on this Concours d’Elegance edition of ‘Gettin’ a li’l psycho on tyres, I hope you will join me again tomorrow. Don’t forget to come back now !
