OSCA MT4 2AD, Ironstone Winery Concours d'Elegance

Neighbours Shadows – Ironstone Concours d’Elegance.

Today’s blog comes courtesy of Geoffrey Horton who took part in the Ironstone Concours d’Elegance back in September.

OSCA MT4 2AD, Ironstone Winery Concours d'Elegance

Among the cars saw was this 1955 OSCA MT4, built by the Maserati brothers once they were free of obligations to the company bearing their own name, said to have been raced on the West Coast from 1955 to 1957.

Ferrari Dino 196 S Recreation, Ironstone Winery Concours d'Elegance

Just over two years ago I learned about a mystery batch of recreations of Ferrari 196 S V6 powered sports cars, it appears the Dino V6 seen here might belong to another car from that mystery batch.

Shadow Chevrolet Mk II, Ironstone Winery Concours d'Elegance

At Ironstone Geoffrey was pleasantly surprised to learn that Dennis Losher who restored this wonderful 1971 Shadow Mk II I looked at last summer is a near neighbour.

Losher & Horton, Ironside Winery Concours d'Elegance

Dennis on the left above and Geoffrey right appear to have become friends.

Shadow Dodge DN6, Ironstone Winery Concours d'Elegance

Above another car restored by Dennis is the 3rd of 3 Dodge powered Shadow Formula 5000 open wheel cars that raced in the USA from 1975 to 1976. This car #DN6-3A is said to have been raced by the legendary Welshman Tom Pryce in the inaugural 1975 Long Beach Grand Prix and at Riverside by future 1979 World Champion Jody Scheckter, from South Africa, races from which both drivers retired with gearbox and engine problems respectively.

My thanks as always to Geoffrey for sharing his photographs.

High Fidelity Tribute – Hawk Stratos

The Lancia Stratos HF (High Fidelity) was a mid engined 2 seat sports car powered by the same V6 motor as the Ferrari and Fiat Dino models. Form 1974 to 1976 competition variants of the Stratos dominated the World Rally scene and the model won the World Championship for three successive years.

Hawk Stratos, Bristol Italian Auto Moto Festival

Sandro Munari with co-drivers Mario Mannucci (’74/’75) and Italy Silvio Maiga (’76/’77) was the most successful driver of the Stratos competition models winning 7 WRC events of the 18 credited to the model. In 1975 the works Lancia team was sponsored by the Italian national airline Alitalia in the white, green and red colours of today’s featured car which was built from a Hawk Stratos kit in 1981.

Hawk Stratos, Bristol Italian Auto Moto Festival

Hawk Stratos fiber glass panels are so faithfully reproduced, the manufacturer claims that they can and are used as replacements on genuine Bertone designed Lancia Stratos HF models.

Motors for the Hawk Versions of the Stratos can vary from transversely mounted in line 4 cylinders such as powers today’s featured car to similarly mounted V6’s from Ferrari or ALFA Romeo.

The Lancia Stratos HF continued to be successful in the World Rally Championship up until 1981 when privateer Bernard Darniche with co driver Alain Mahé won the Tour de Corse in Corsica.

Sixties Ferrari Covers – GALPOT Automobilia

Continuing to clear some of the motor racing stuff I have collected over the years today’s post features a couple of MotorSport covers that are currently on line on my “lightpress” e-bay account.

MotorSport, Goodwood, April 1966

First up from April 1966 the staff at MotorSport believed that the idea of an apparently arbitrary 3 liter / 183 cui limit on the size of forth coming GT regulations was not either in the interest of the sport, or the British motor industry who’s GT cars from Jaguar and Aston Martin with motors over the new limit would be rendered obsolete despite not being particularly quicker than their competition with smaller motors. The photo shows the start of the 1963 Goodwood Tourist Trophy race featuring four Ferrari 250 GTO’s, 2 Aston Martins and 2 E-type Jaguars which was won by Graham Hill in the #11 250 GTO.

MotorSport, Surtess, Ferrari 312, Siracusa, June 1966

By June 1966 the Ferrari V12 3 litre 183 cui Formula One car was looking a good bet to win the championship with 1964 champion John Surtees at the wheel. John is seen guiding his Ferrari 312 fitted with a downsized sports car V12 motor through the streets of Siracusa on his way to an easy non championship victory. Note how Sicilian spectators are clearly seen ligning the inside of the crash barriers which were presumably installed to protect them. By the end of June John Surtees quit the Ferrari team after a disagreement with Ferrari management which deprived him and Ferrari of Championships which up until then had been theirs for the taking.

MotorSport, Bandini, Ferrari P3/4, Daytona, March 1967

Finally after a humiliating defeat to Ford at Le Mans in 1966 in February 1967 Ferrari stole a little Ford thunder by claiming victory in the Daytona 24 hour race. Seen on the cover of the March 1967 edition of MotorSport is Lorenzo Bandini at the wheel of the #23 Ferrari P3/4 he shared on his way to victory with Chris Amon. The #26 North American Racing Team Ferrari P4 driven by Pedro Rodriguez and Jean Guichet finished second.

Shell Advertisement, Chaparral, Ferrari, Ford,Porsche,

A couple of Ferrari items I put up for auction on e-bay at lightpress this week include this Shell advertisement published in MotorSport in October 1967 showcasing the success of Shell sponsored cars in the 1967 world sports car championship which was won by Ferrari after Dan Gurney and AJ Foyt driving a Ford won the 1967 Le Mans 24 hour series glamour event and Chaparral won the BOAC 500 mile race at Brands Hatch with Phil Hill and Mike Spence sharing the driving.

Castrol GTX Advertsement, Ferrari 275 GTB/4

Despite the model being out of production for 3 years by the time it was published, this July 1971 Castrol GTX advertisement features a Ferrari 365 GTB/4.

MotorSport Cover, 08/71, Clay Regazzoni, Ferrari 312 PB, Zeltweg

Finally from August 1971 the front cover of MotorSport featuring Clay Regazzoni driving a Ferrari 312PB during the 1971 Zeltweg 1000 kms sports car race in Austria.

Ferraris On The Green – Niello Concours At Serrano

Continuing our look at some of the cars at Niello Concours at Serrano which I started on Wednesday and will conclude next Wednesday here are some of the Ferrari’s present as seen by Karl Krause.

Ferrari 328 GTS, Niello Concours at Serrano

There are many older Ferrari’s in the USA than this Ferrari 328 GTS, but I found this interesting article about a Ferrari 328 GTS owner in Poland, where his car is amongst the oldest Ferrari’s in the country.

Ferrari 550, Niello Concours at Serrano

Despite the fact I’ve never held any leaning towards the game of golf or golfers to whom the Ferrari 550 above is aimed at with it’s boot trunk big enough to take a golf bag I have always been a fan of the Ferrari 550 because the engine is in the correct end of the car.

Ferrari 360, Niello Concours at Serrano

While looking for unusual info on the Ferrari 360 like the one above I found this fascinating topical tip on how to increase the range of of the key alarm fob from two feet to 40 feet for free on facebook of all places.

Ferrari 360, Niello Concours at Serrano

MG used to run ads with the strap line “your mother would not like it”, same applies to a matt black Ferrari 360 in my humble opinion, I guess that is a good reason to re-examine my aversion to the combination.

Ferrari 458 Italia, Niello Concours at Serrano

Finally the Ferrari 458 Italia is without question the best looking Ferrari I’ve seen for a long time, wonder if I’ll ever get bored drooling over them.

My thanks to Karl Krause for sharing today’s photographs.

Thanks for joining me for this “Ferrari’s On The Green” edition of “Gettin’ a li’l psycho on tyres” I hope you will join me again tomorrow when I’ll be looking at the first of a series of racing paint jobs on a street vehicle. Don’t forget to come back now !

Ferrari Racing Treasures – Blackhawk Museum

Today’s Ferrari Friday’s looks at a few of the Ferrari Racing Treasures at the Blackhawk Museum captured by Geoffrey Horton.

Ferrari 212 Export Touring Barchetta, Blackhawk Museum, CA

This 1952 Ferrari 212 Export Barchetta features bodywork by Touring of Turin and was originally owned in 1952 by Baron Luigi Bordonaro di Chiaramonte of Palermo and as I posted last year the Baron raced the car successfully.

Ferrari 250MM Vignale, Blackhawk Museum, CA

Phil Hill’s 1953 Ferrari 250 MM Vignale #0260MM was featured on this blog a couple of years ago, it helped set up Phil’s career on the path to becoming a three time Le Mans winner and 1960 World Driver Champion all victories which were won driving Ferrari cars.

Ferrari 500 Mondial Spyder, Blackhawk Museum, CA

As I have found on many occasions in the past some Ferrari’s are a little more difficult to identify than others this particular 500 Mondial is one of those more difficult to identify as I found out last year.

Ferrari 750 Monza, Blackhawk Museum, CA

The Blackhawk Collections 1955 Ferrari 750 Monza with unique bodywork by Scaglietti has also featured on these pages before although it will be better remembered for appearing on the cover of Road & Track in December 1956 by many more. It is the car belonging to Tony Paravano that Carlyle Blackwell took a photo of.

Ferrari 625 LM Spyder Touring, Blackhawk Museum, CA

In 1956 Ferrari built 3 625LM’s with Touring bodies and 2,5 litre 4 cylinder motor’s, the one seen here carries the #11 which suggests this is the car that crashed at the start of the 1956 Le Mans 24 hours after it had won the Supercortemaggiore at Monza, fitted with a 2 litre engine with Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins at the wheel.

My thanks to Geoffrey Horton for sharing his photographs, more on these cars will appear in the coming months.

Ferrari Road Treasures – Blackhawk Museum

A couple of weeks ago Geoffrey Horton kindly asked me what kind of cars I was looking for pictures of and I responded that I was desperately short of Ferrari’s, as you can see from today’s Ferrari blog, and will see in next weeks blog Geoffrey has come up trumps and saved Ferrari Friday single handedly probably up until Christmas. Here is a preview of some of the Ferrari road cars that will feature in the coming weeks.

Ferrari 342 America Vignale Cabriolet, Blackhawk Museum, CA

The Ferrari America series started in 1950 was designed to meet the requirements of Ferrari’s customers who wanted a little more than a racing car adapted for the road. The America cars featured more leg room and head room but were still powered by motors derived from Ferrari’s racing programmes. This 1952 Ferrari 342 America Cabriolet features a unique, as in one of, body by Vignale and is powered by a 230 hp Lamperedi designed V12.

Ferrari 375 America Coupé, Blackhawk Museum, CA

Following the 23 342’s came the Ferrari 375 America with a larger and more powerful Lampredi V12 which produced 300 hp. This 1953 Vignale bodied Coupé is one of two, regular readers may remember reading about the other one nearly a year ago.

Ferrari 375 MM Ghia Coupé Speciale, Blackhawk Museum, CA

Sporting it’s original salmon paintwork and with just over 8000 miles on the clock this unique, one of, 1954 Ghia bodied Coupé sits on a 375 MM chassis designed for racing. It was the last Ferrari chassis to be fitted with Ghia body.

Ferrari 400 Superamerica, Blackhawk Museum, CA

In 1961 the Ferrari 400 Superamerica made it’s debut at the Geneva Motorshow with a downsized 4 litre 244 cui V12 which produced 340 hp. The second series Superamerica’s like the 1964 example seen here was built on a slightly longer chassis. Only 47 Superamerica’s of all types, Coupé, Cabriolet and Spider were built up until 1964.

Ferrari 500 Superfast Coupé, Blackhawk Museum, CA

In 1964 the 500 Superfast Coupé was introduced to replace the America series cars, like the earlier models the Superfast was only built to order and now powered by a 5 litre / 302 cui motor giving 400 hp.
This 1966 example is a series 2 500 Superfast with Pinin Farina Coupé body, the 33rd of 37 Superfasts built up until 1967.

My thanks to Geoffrey Horton for sharing today’s photographs.

Thanks for joining me on this Ferrari Road Treasures edition of “Gettin’ a li’l psycho on tyres” I hope you will join me again tomorrow when GALPOT’s 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Porsche 911 resumes. Don’t forget to come back now !
